Stalden lies at an altitude of 800 metres, where the Saas and Matter valleys meet. The municipality stretches from the valley floor up the slopes and is surrounded by steep mountains, forests and streams. Bridges, churches and chapels give the village a rich cultural heritage. Stalden is also a starting point for hiking and biking tours in the region.
Paths between the river, village and valley views
The Bridge Trail starts at Stalden railway station, follows the Tiechelweg and Stale through the village, and crosses the Mattervispa on the Merjubrücke. It returns to the village side over the restored Chibrücke and loops back to the station. This circular route combines river crossings with a walk through the village. Stalden is also known as “the village of bridges” because of its many bridges in a small area. The Chibrücke dates from 1544 and was built by master builder Ulrich Ruffiner.
The Neubrück-Saumtielbrücke is another landmark in the village’s bridge history: built in 1599, it spans the deeply cut Vispa in a single broad arch. The high-level trail passes St. Michael’s Church and offers a view into the gorge where the Mattervispa and Saaservispa meet. From the village hill known as “Biel”, the view extends across the entire Visp Valley; visibility depends on the weather.
The Wasserleitenweg climbs near the hamlet of Liechtbiel to the Äbibärgeri water channel, which has been professionally restored and runs uncovered in some sections. The trail passes close to a Swiss Family picnic and fire pit and is considered ideal for family hikes. Use of the fire pit may be restricted seasonally. The Planet Trail runs from Stalden to Visp and is open year-round; check current trail conditions before setting out.
All three circular trails in Stalden pass public transport stops several times along the way and are accessible by train and bus. The railway station is on the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway line between Visp and Zermatt and is also the starting and finishing point of the Bridge Trail. Check local operating conditions before travelling.
Churches, historic buildings and museums
The well-preserved historic settlement around the church stands out against the rocky, undeveloped surroundings and the village’s more recent development. Dedicated to the Archangel Michael, St. Michael’s parish church is considered the oldest church in the Visp Valley still used as a church today. The Baroque church was built in 1777.
The ensemble known as the Meierhaus consists of three houses and a residential tower. Dendrochronological studies date its oldest part, the residential tower, to 1293/1294; it is attributed to the Lords of Asper. The postman8 Museum in the historic village centre also offers a glimpse into life in earlier times. Housed in a historic granary, it presents a varied exhibition on everyday life in the past in an area measuring 6 Ă— 6 metres. Check opening arrangements before visiting.
The Philately Museum contains more than 145,000 different stamps from around the world. The collection is kept in 135 albums and 66 binders. Another venue for cultural exhibitions and events is the ground floor “Wohnung Andres”, which is owned by the “Alt Stalu” association. Exhibitions and events may change.
The Kastelegge Chapel stands on a scenic promontory about halfway between the hamlets of Mülackern and Riedji. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Every October, the parish organises a pilgrimage to the chapel; the date and programme may vary. By car, the access road continues via Neubrück and the hamlet of “Alte Scheune” for about another 400 metres in the direction of Staldenried. From there, a footpath follows the Stations of the Cross to the chapel. As access conditions may change, it is advisable to check the route before visiting.
Another chapel stands in the hamlet of NeubrĂĽck, on the right bank of the Vispe beside an arched bridge built in 1599. It is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
