From the sun terrace in Hohsaas, the view stretches to the Monte Rosa massif and across the Saas mountains; how clear the view is depends on the weather. Saas-Grund combines this high-alpine setting with hiking trails, mountain bike routes and cultural attractions. To help plan your trip, it’s useful to sort the options by what matters most to you: would you like to enjoy the views and high-altitude trails, choose a particular route, or explore local and alpine history alongside the mountains?

Hohsaas and Kreuzboden: high-alpine perspectives

The Hohsaas and Kreuzboden area is considered high alpine and offers summer hikes and high-altitude trails. Views of 18 four-thousanders in the Mischabel range and the Monte Rosa massif make a striking impression on the landscape. From the sun terrace in Hohsaas, you can look out over the Monte Rosa massif and the Saas mountains. For days focused on hiking, you can choose from both summer hikes and high-altitude trails in the area.

The Hohsaas viewpoint is around five minutes from Saas-Grund by mountain railway. You can reach Kreuzboden above Saas-Grund by gondola. Timetables and operating details vary by season; check the information for your travel dates before planning your journeys. This lets you include mountain railway rides in your plans without structuring your whole day around a single route.

Trails with different profiles

The Furwald singletrack runs from Triftalp via “Zingelstapfu” and through the “Furwald” down to Saas-Grund. The sequence of the starting point, named waypoints and destination gives you a clear idea of the trail’s route. At the Kreuzboden Bike Skills Park, you can choose from three varied routes, each around 380 metres long, and a short uphill trail. The Kreuzboden–Trift flow trail is five kilometres long and runs from Kreuzboden down to Trift. Since summer 2022, it has complemented the existing Hohsaas Trail, which starts in Hohsaas and is intended for mountain biking.

To choose between the biking options, you can consider the stated trail types and lengths: the Skills Park routes are each around 380 metres long, while the flow trail is five kilometres long. The Hohsaas Trail’s starting point, Hohsaas, and its intended use for mountain biking are specified. Trail conditions and routes may change; check the latest information for your chosen route before setting out.

Cultural attractions and local history

The Sonnenhalde Cultural Centre is in the old village centre of Saas-Grund. The exhibitions also cover different subjects: the exhibition about Alexander Burgener, the “King of Mountain Guides,” includes an integrated cinema and presents his significance to alpine history. The Johann Josef Imseng memorial exhibition provides information about his life and work. This lets you include cultural themes alongside mountain activities in your plans and choose between alpine history and a biographical memorial exhibition.

Exhibitions may change. If you’re planning a visit, check the latest information. This helps you consider cultural attractions as a separate focus alongside the trails, rather than automatically linking them to a particular route.

Play areas and bouldering

Kreuzboden Adventure Land offers play equipment, a water play park and a barbecue area. This gives it a different focus from the hiking and biking options: play and water activities, as well as a place to barbecue, are the main attractions. Individual facilities may change; check the latest information if you’re planning a visit.

Saas-Grund also has a large outdoor bouldering area with four sub-sectors. One of them is exclusively for beginner boulderers. If you’re considering bouldering as a separate activity, you can include this designated area in your choice. Boulder problems and access conditions may change; check the latest conditions in advance.
