Baltschieder offers a mix of village history, trails in the Baltschiedertal valley and different types of climbing. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on the village centre, the circular trail, indoor climbing or alpine tours. The options also differ in what they offer: the circular trail focuses on route length and information boards, the Baltschieder via ferrata on elevation gain and rocky terrain, and the Vertic climbing hall on bouldering and roped climbing.

Valley Views and Trails

The Baltschiedertal valley opens up at Baltschieder in the southern Bietschhorn massif. As you hike into the valley, you can see the Stockhorn. At the far end of the valley, north of Visp, the Baltschiedergletscher glacier lies between the Bietschhorn, Aelwer Rigg, Breitlauihorn and Jägihorn. The valley is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed on the World Heritage List on 13 December 2001.

The Baltschieder circular trail offers another way to explore the village: a notice dated 6 March 2026 described it as fully developed and open along its entire length. It gave the route as around 6.3 kilometres and mentioned twelve information boards about Baltschieder. Check the current trail status before your visit.

The Baltschieder via ferrata also leads into the Baltschiedertal valley, following the historic Niwärch irrigation channel, which dates from 1370. The elevation gain is 1,400 metres. The route passes steep rock faces, grassy ledges and a rock tower on its way to the Wiwannihütte mountain hut. The Baltschiederklause SAC hut is also in the surrounding area. It is located in the uppermost part of the Baltschiedertal, not in the built-up village, and serves as a starting point for high-altitude hikes and climbing tours ranging from easy to very difficult. The access trail to the hut follows the irrigation channels and passes flower-rich alpine pastures and the glacier forefield.

Village History and Culture

The old village centre includes the Sebastian Chapel, dedicated to Saint Sebastian. Blacknose sheep are also part of village culture. The Baltschieder Cultural Commission organises events covering music, literature, and visual and performing arts. As event dates may change, check the current programme before travelling.

The valley’s history spans different periods. A battle against the dukes of Zähringen took place in the Baltschiedertal in 1212 and is considered the first known battle for freedom in the Upper Valais. A socketed axe was discovered there in the late 19th century. Finds from the Baltschiedertal provide evidence of settlement in the German-speaking Rhône Valley and its side valleys during the Metal Ages. The Wild Man play dates back to deep in pre-Christian times.

During the most recent renovation of a chapel, a Baltschieder municipal coat of arms dating from 1766 was uncovered in the chancel arch. Details like these add tangible traces of local history to the picture of the valley, without requiring a dedicated visit programme.

Climbing Indoors and Outdoors

The Vertic climbing hall in Baltschieder has 770 square metres of climbing, bouldering and children’s leisure areas. Its 500-square-metre bouldering area offers routes for beginners and experienced climbers. For top-rope climbing, there are four auto-belay devices and eight fixed ropes. The hall therefore offers bouldering and roped climbing as distinct activities, while the via ferrata and valley tours provide an alpine alternative.

When planning your days, it helps to consider these options separately: the circular trail and information boards offer a different focus from the via ferrata, the tours starting at the Baltschiederklause or the areas in the Vertic climbing hall. This way, you can tailor your holiday-apartment search to the kind of stay you want in Baltschieder.
