Rudenz Castle, churches from different periods and the Uri Reuss Delta give Flüelen several distinct highlights. Other features include the Gotthard railway line, seasonal steamers, and opportunities for cycling and paragliding. When choosing your accommodation, you can first consider whether cultural history, water and nature, or boat trips will shape your stay.

Planning Your Train Journey, Boat Trip and Stay

Flüelen is on the international Gotthard railway line. SGV steamers dock at the landing stage. Their timetables are seasonal and may change; check connections for your travel dates if you would like to plan a boat trip. This will help you decide what you want to focus on during your stay and which connection to use for your arrival or an excursion.

Rudenz Castle and Flüelen’s Churches

Rudenz Castle was probably built in the early 13th century just outside the village complex of the time. It was a fortified defensive tower surrounded by moats, at the beginning of the Gotthard road. The castle park is open to the public; access may vary seasonally. If the park is important to your visit, check the current conditions in advance.

The Old Parish Church of St. George and St. Nicholas was consecrated on 16 November 1664. After the Jagdmatt Chapel in Erstfeld, built in 1637/38, it is the canton of Uri’s first major surviving early Baroque church. Its paintings and stucco work from around 1758 are among the finest Rococo ensembles in Central Switzerland. The Church of the Sacred Heart represents a different period: it is considered an exceptionally intact sacred Gesamtkunstwerk of the late Art Nouveau period.

A former church in Flüelen also houses a rock crystal exhibition and is now used for a variety of purposes. Exhibition displays may change, so check the current information before making a special trip. Together, the different churches and Rudenz Castle show that Flüelen’s cultural history is not confined to a single building.

The Reuss Delta: Nature and the Swiss Path

The Uri Reuss Delta is a nature and landscape conservation area of national importance. It lies on the Swiss Path between Flüelen and Seedorf. The delta is home to a diverse range of wildlife and plant life. Animals observed there include swans, dragonflies, various species of duck, fish and Scottish Highland cattle.

The “Naturdetektive Reussdelta” Smartrail starts at Flüelen railway station and runs for around 3.5 kilometres to the Seerestaurant. If you plan to follow this route, check in advance whether it is currently available on your travel dates. There is a clear rule about fires in the nature reserve: they are permitted only at the designated official fire pits.

By the Water and Outdoors

Flüelen has a public beach at the Gruonbach stream. The lido at Gruonbach was built in the 1920s; swimming conditions and access may vary. If you are making swimming a definite part of your plans, check the conditions before your visit. Lake Lucerne offers another aspect of nature: 30 fish species have been recorded in the lake, including Balchen, whitefish, lake trout, pike and perch.

For cyclists, Flüelen is on two national and two local Veloland Schweiz cycling routes. As routes may be updated, check the current route if you want to follow a specific one. There is a paragliding launch platform on the Eggbergen, with views of Lake Uri and the Alpine panorama. A paragliding landing site is located on the Flüeler Allmend, ten minutes from the cable car. Launch conditions and regulations may change; check the current conditions before flying.

Flüelen therefore suits a range of travel plans: you can focus on cultural sites, choose nature and water as your theme, or take seasonal boat services into account.
