Erstfeld combines the history of the Gotthard Railway with paths through the village and destinations in the alpine Erstfeldertal. A railway history trail brings important buildings into view; signposted hiking trails, geological features and mountain tours offer other ways to explore. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between visits in the village and longer tours into the valley: some activities have set seasonal visiting days, while for others, walking time and conditions are key.
Railway history in the village
The railway history trail leads through Erstfeld and brings the village’s most important buildings into view. The Jagdmatt Chapel also offers a tangible link to the past: dating from 1638, it is considered the first early Baroque building in the canton of Uri. The lime kiln in Rynächt was the first construction project of the Gotthard Railway on Erstfeld soil; it is covered by rock. The historic Gotthard mountain line is still in operation. Check the current timetable before your trip.
Visits to the SBB Historic depot
The SBB Historic depot in Erstfeld can be visited from April to October on the first Saturday of each month. SBB Historic also offers groups discovery tours of the depot; check availability before booking. The seasonal program of activities includes monthly rides on the San Gottardo experience train from May to August, as well as regular cab rides. If you want to plan your stay around a train ride or a depot visit, check the dates in advance.
Hiking trails and destinations in Erstfeldertal
Erstfeld has more than 75 kilometres of signposted hiking trails; the international E1 long-distance trail also passes through the village. The Erstfeld Fountain Trail leads through Erstfeld and its surroundings, where you can discover various fountains. Another option is the first stage of the Gotthard Tunnel Trail: it runs from Erstfeld to Bristen and is 13.1 kilometres long.
As a destination for a longer hike, the SAC Krönten Hut sits at the end of the Erstfeldertal at an elevation of 1,903 metres, in an alpine raised bog. The hike from Erstfeld station to the hut through the Erstfeldertal takes about four hours; walking time depends on conditions and the state of the trail. The area around the hut is characterised by a diverse range of plants, streams, waterfalls, striking rock formations and several mountain lakes. There is also a well-marked climbing garden nearby, with routes for beginners and experienced climbers. Check local conditions and route availability.
Geology, moorland and winter tours
Near Erstfeld at Scheidnössli lies the BLN site 1610: a geological natural monument with an easily accessible tectonic contact zone between the crystalline Aar Massif and its sedimentary cover. Fulensee is listed as ML site 110 and is one of the most diverse moorland landscapes in the high Alps; the Kargebiet features Ice Age landforms. Both locations complement the historic and hiking destinations with a geological perspective on the landscape.
Erstfeld is also a starting point for ski tours, with routes leading into the Erstfeldertal, up Bälmeten and to Gross Spannort. In winter, conditions depend heavily on snow, avalanche risk and weather. The options therefore vary considerably by season and activity: village history and depot visits can be planned around the trail and visiting dates, while alpine destinations require planning based on the route and conditions.
