A medieval defensive tower, timber houses built using the log construction method and a seasonal cross-country ski trail network showcase different sides of Hospental. The municipality lies in the south of the canton of Uri in the Ursern Valley, between Andermatt and Realp and at the confluence of the Furkareuss and Gotthardreuss rivers. If you are considering Hospental as a place to stay, village history, winter trails and mountain-pass journeys can each take priority depending on when you travel.

Village history between Hospental and Zumdorf

The municipality consists of the street village of the same name and the former Walser settlement of Zumdorf. Numerous timber houses built using the log construction method stand in Hospental’s village centre; they were built after the village fire of 1669. The baroque parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built between 1706 and 1708; its features include richly decorated altars. Together, the village centre and the church tell the story of different building periods, without requiring a long list of individual buildings.

The chapels also reflect different historical layers. The baroque Chapel of St. Karl dates from 1721 and was renovated in the neo-baroque style in 1907. In Zumdorf, the Chapel of St. Nikolaus originally dates back to 1591; it was renovated in the baroque style in 1758. The dates mark different events: for St. Nikolaus, the early origins and later renovation stand side by side, while for St. Karl, the year it was built and its renovation describe two clearly distinct stages.

In January 2023, Hospental was officially named one of Switzerland’s most beautiful villages. The Tower of the Lords of Hospental is also one of more than 50 architectural monuments of national importance in Uri. These distinctions and historic buildings give the village a clear cultural focus, while its location between Andermatt and Realp also matters for planning the rest of your journey.

The defensive tower and guided village history

The Tower of the Lords of Hospental was built in the first half of the 13th century. One of its distinctive features is a publicly accessible viewing platform with spectacular panoramic views. The tower is open year-round, around the clock; however, access is subject to weather conditions. Check the conditions before your visit, especially if the tower is a fixed part of your day’s plans.

A guided tour of the Ursern Valley includes Hospental and introduces visitors to the village’s history. Topics include the medieval defensive tower, several historic inns and the period when mules and horse-drawn carriages crossed the Gotthard Pass. Tours can be booked online at least two days in advance; they are subject to the availability of tour guides. This makes the tour a separate option to plan for, which you can take into account before making a spontaneous visit to the tower.

Winter cross-country ski trails and summer trips over the passes

In winter, the cross-country ski trail network in the Ursern Valley runs from Andermatt through Hospental to Realp. The groomed trails accommodate both classic and skating styles; grooming and opening are seasonal. The network covers 32 kilometres, although the distance depends on the route in use. The focus is therefore on two skiing techniques and a regional trail connection, not on a single loop. Before making plans, check which sections are groomed and open during your travel dates.

Pass journeys are particularly suited to summer. Main roads 2, the Gotthard Pass road, and 19, the Furka Pass road, run through Hospental. Winter cross-country skiing trips and summer journeys over the passes are therefore clearly distinct seasonal reasons to include the village in your travel plans.

Location and travel connections as part of choosing accommodation

Hospental has a PostBus stop and a regional train stop served by the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway on the route from Andermatt to Brig. In addition to these connections, both main roads run through the village. When looking for a hotel in Hospental, you can match these local connections to the focus of your trip: village history, cross-country skiing in winter or a summer trip over a pass. You do not need to assume that you will use any particular mode of transport; check the timetable in advance and plan around the time of year you are travelling.

The different building periods, the weather-dependent access to the viewing platform, the guided village tour’s reliance on tour guide availability and the seasonal cross-country ski trail network each call for a different planning rhythm. For a visit focused on history, the tower, village centre and guided history take centre stage. In winter, the ski trails add a seasonal activity; in summer, trips over the passes are an option. This makes it possible to plan your visit to Hospental around the days when activities are actually available and what you want from your trip, without combining all the options into a fixed itinerary.
