Wassen lies at an altitude of about 930 metres above sea level on the left bank of the Reuss, in the upper Reuss Valley in Uri, at the entrance to the Meiental and in the Uri Alps. A variety of themes come together here for visitors: protected landscapes and waterways, historic transport routes, church art and railway history. You can plan your explorations around what interests you most, whether it is nature, local history or technological developments.

Landscape and historic trails

As of 19 August 2025, the cantonal protected-site inventory classifies the parish church of St. Gallus as a nationally significant individual cultural site. The Meiental, including its stream, is classified as a regional landscape protection area; the Meienreuss and its tributaries are considered regional natural sites. The Old Susten Pack Trail is also listed in the inventory, as a nationally significant historic transport route.

The old Susten Trail is a former pack trail from Wassen to the pass summit towards Bern. It is classified both as a main hiking trail and as a national mountain-bike route. As route classifications may change, check the current status before setting off. These different designations also make the trail interesting from a historical perspective: it is not only associated with its former use as a pack trail, but is also part of designated hiking and mountain-bike routes.

Cave and nature experiences

The Pfaffensprung Crystal Cave is 165 metres long and is considered the second-largest cave in Switzerland. Its entrance can be reached after a 15-minute walk; the actual walking time may vary depending on trail conditions. Check local access conditions before visiting. This lets you plan the cave as a separate activity without assuming that the walking time will always be the same.

The Meienreuss and its tributaries are also part of the regional natural-site inventory. The reservoir at Pfaffensprung lies below the village; near Wassen, the Meienreuss flows into the Reuss. These waterways and the protected landscape of the Meiental give the area its distinctive character.

Church, Gotthard Railway and local history

The Church of St. Gallus was consecrated in 1735. Its ceiling paintings depict scenes from the life of St. Gallus; work on the furnishings of the Baroque church continued until 1742. Wassen itself was first mentioned in a document on 8 May 1287. From 1439, it was an independent parish with a priest. These dates trace different chapters in the history of the village and its church.

The Eggwald railway keeper’s house offers another glimpse into Gotthard history. SBB restored it in 2019/2020 and converted it into a museum visitors can walk through. Visitors can explore the building and learn about the daily lives of railway keepers at the Gotthard. The disused Antonini quarry is a unique testament to the heyday of Uri’s quarries. Wassen granite was used, among other things, for a monument to the Filipino freedom fighter José Rizal in Manila.

Together with the power stations in Göschenen AG and Amsteg, the Wassen hydroelectric power station forms the Reuss cascade. At the hydroelectric power station, SBB introduces visitors to the world of electricity generation. In a scenic, romantic setting, the Gottardo Hiking Trail offers insights into the important Gotthard Railway, with more than 50 information panels and viewing platforms. These attractions focus on two different aspects of the region’s infrastructure: electricity generation and railways.

Grotto and seasonal cheese products

A trail follows the old Susten Trail towards Schanz and continues to the Marian Grotto. Along the way, there are nine sites with thought-provoking displays. A defensive fortification was built in the early 17th century at the boundary of the Meiental towards the Haslital. The Schanz Marian Grotto was restored in 2020 and contains a statue in honour of the Virgin Mary.

During the alpine summer, milk is processed into a range of products in a modern cheese dairy, where visitors can sample them. Production and sampling are seasonal; check locally for current availability. This seasonal insight into milk processing complements the themes of landscape, history and technology that shape Wassen.
