Cavergno is located in the Maggia Valley in the canton of Ticino and has been part of the municipality of Cevio since 2006. The village lies about 29 km northwest of Locarno, near the confluence of Val Bavona and Val Lavizzara. In the historic village centre, long cobbled lanes lead into Val Bavona on one side and Val Lavizzara on the other. The village’s history and hiking opportunities offer different ways to shape your stay.

Choose hiking routes to suit your available time

The Sentiero Cristallina passes through Cavergno along the Bavona River to the I Mulitt power station. The route is 13 km long; the stated walking time is 4 hours 30 minutes, with an elevation gain of 900 metres. Seasonal conditions and detours may affect the route. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

A shorter option in terms of time is the Circuito Cavergno: the signposted circular trail takes two hours to walk and is suitable for everyone. The two options therefore differ mainly in the time required. You should also check current local trail conditions before taking the circular route.

Chapels, church and architectural history

There are 36 fresco-decorated chapels in the Cavergno area. They date from various periods, from the 16th century to just a few decades ago. Cavergno’s first church opened for worship in 1682 and was expanded in several stages during the 18th and 19th centuries. The parish church houses a Stations of the Cross painted by Antonio Rinaldi in 1872.

Individual buildings also tell of different periods in the village’s history. The stone arch bridge over the Gola del lupo was built in 1885. The Oratorio di San Luigi was built in 1883–1884 at the initiative of Luigi Tuni and received frescoes by Francesco Poroli in 1886. It also preserves a valuable painting from 1638, which came from an oratory in Val Bavona.

Crafts and traces of village life

Two traditional looms are still in operation in Cavergno. They are used mainly to make tablecloths and rugs. Local crafts also include preserved stone Carasc supports for pergolas with American grapevines. These details sit alongside the cobbled lanes and reveal different sides of the village, from textile work to the design of its vine-covered pergolas.

Cavergno has two washhouses, one of which used water from a temperate spring. There are also roughly worked monolithic stone troughs, which are probably older. The old stables stood at both ends of the historic village centre.

Landscape above the village

Numerous terraces lie above Cavergno, where hay was once gathered for livestock. A forest of centuries-old oaks, beeches and chestnuts also lies above the village, between 500 and 1,200 metres above sea level. The terraces point to the former use of the hillside, while the forest offers a different connection to the landscape. Together, they complement the village’s cultural attractions with the history of its surroundings.
