Bosco/Gurin is located 1,506 metres above sea level in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The municipality belongs to the Vallemaggia district and the Rovana subdistrict. Its history as a Walser settlement goes back a long way: at the end of the 16th century, around 300 German-speaking people lived here. Today, the Walser House and a themed trail offer insights into the history, traditions and culture of the place.

Walser History in the Village and Museum

The Walser House was founded in 1938 as the first ethnographic museum in the canton of Ticino. Its main building dates from 1386 and is one of the oldest rural buildings in the Alpine region. As a living museum, it showcases earlier ways of life, housing and domestic work. The focus is therefore not only on individual objects, but also on everyday life and the home.

A Walser-themed trail runs around the village of Bosco Gurin and leads to numerous features of Walser history, traditions and culture. Those interested in the history of the place can explore it in two different ways: the living museum focuses on life in the home, while the trail reveals traces in the surrounding village. The two perspectives complement each other without requiring a particular order of visit.

Winter: Slopes, Toboggan Run and Snowshoes

The Bosco Gurin winter ski area has 30 kilometres of slopes suitable for beginners as well as more advanced skiers. As it is a seasonal facility, check its opening status before travelling. Another clearly defined winter option is the toboggan run from Rossboda to Bosco Gurin, which is about four kilometres long. Here too, it is advisable to check the current opening status before setting off.

Snowshoe hikes offer a way to discover nature and Walser culture. Before your trip, check the current conditions and, where applicable, the options for guided hikes. The activities have different focuses: skiing on the slopes caters to different skill levels, the toboggan run has a specified length, and snowshoe hikes combine discovering nature and culture. This makes it easier to plan based on the kind of winter activity you are looking for.

Trails and Activities in the Warmer Months

An unpaved road leads from Bosco Gurin to Alpe Grossalp. Overnight stays are also possible at the alp; check availability before your trip. Mountain bikers can choose from family-friendly routes and downhill trails of varying difficulty. Check the availability of the routes locally.

The Bann basin lies above Bosco Gurin at an altitude of about 2,300 metres. It offers a wide selection of well-equipped climbing routes on compact Antigorio gneiss. Check the conditions and access before climbing. Another activity is a treasure hunt in Bosco dei Weltu, based on stories about the legendary Weltu. Check locally whether it is currently being offered.

The Walser-themed trail, mountain bike routes and climbing each appeal to different interests. When planning, the first consideration is therefore which activity you want to shape your stay around. The road connection to Alpe Grossalp, the option of staying overnight there and the other activities can be considered separately; the information does not imply any particular order or combined route.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation

Bosco Gurin can be reached from Locarno railway station by public buses, which run numerous services every day. As timetables may change, check your connection before travelling. If you are considering an overnight stay at Alpe Grossalp, check its availability separately. This allows you to plan your trip around the specific options without assuming a particular type of accommodation or itinerary.
