Gordevio combines routes into the mountain areas with a compact village centre and a remarkable concentration of chapels and frescoes. The different hiking details provide clear points of reference for planning your trip: one circuit is rated difficult and described in kilometres, while another is described by duration and suitability. Local history can also be read in specific details—from a chapel bearing the year 1474 to a fresco dating from 1753.

Location and Landscape around Gordevio

Gordevio lies on the left bank of the Maggia in the lower Valle Maggia, about ten kilometres northwest of Locarno. The wider area includes alpine settlements; most of the municipal area consists of alpine terrain, wooded slopes and mountainous landscape. Across the wider area, elevations range from about 280 to 2,215 metres above sea level. These figures refer to the wider surroundings, not just the compact village centre.

The Maggia’s floodplains in Gordevio are included in the ZPN1 nature protection zone. If you are planning work or an activity for which access is a particular consideration, check the current municipal regulations. A vineyard is another striking feature of the landscape: its gradient is more than 80 per cent.

Hikes with Different Profiles

The Gordevio–Alpe Nimi–Gordevio circular hike is 15.2 kilometres long and rated difficult. On this route, steps beyond Archeggio lead to the Gialìtt stone bridge.

Another option is the marked Circuito Gordevio. This circular route is listed as taking four hours and is also rated suitable for everyone. Check the trail markings before setting out. The two descriptions answer different planning questions: for the Alpe Nimi circuit, length and difficulty are the main points; for the Circuito, they are duration and stated suitability. Conditions in the mountains can change with the seasons.

Cycling and Getting There

The cycle path through Gordevio leads into a forest that offers pleasant shade on warm days. The section of the cycle route between Gordevio and Aurigeno runs partly along country roads. These route details provide useful points of reference if you are including cycling in your travel plans.

Gordevio is served by bus route NFB 315 from Locarno railway station towards Cavergno, Paese; the route stops at the Gordevio bus stop. Check the current timetable before travelling.

Alleys, Chapels and Frescoes

The village centre is compact. Its narrow, winding alleys open onto the square in front of the oratory. Along the small street from the church square through the village centre, some houses and stables certainly date from the 17th century; they were later partly extensively renovated and enlarged. Original frescoes can be seen in the historic buildings. A brief look around the village centre thus reveals different layers of history, even though the buildings may not have remained unchanged.

One of the chapels bears the year 1474. It has been renovated and may have been repainted more than once. The Oratorio di Sant’Antonio Abate dates from the first half of the 17th century; inside are works by Antonio Rinaldi da Tremona from 1874. About twelve chapels are counted on the valley floor, and 19 in the mountain areas. The figures therefore distinguish between the two areas rather than giving a single total for all of Gordevio.

The parish church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo has an ossuary with a Crucifixion fresco by Giuseppe Antonio Felice Orelli from 1753. Two stone bridges also cross the streams descending from the mountain slopes; their construction date is unknown, but today they provide easy access on foot. The bridges are another specific point of reference, while the chapels and frescoes reveal the history of the village.
