Brontallo is the first village in Val Lavizzara and is situated on a rocky terrace. Its hillside location shapes the settlement: houses are reached by stairways, while the stables and haylofts are grouped on the side of the valley that opens to the west. In the area, the network of terrace and boundary walls extends for at least 22 kilometres. The village landscape thus brings together the steep terrain and the ways people have shaped it.
Church, Frescoes and a Historic Bridge
A 17th-century church stands at the northern edge of the residential area. Its façade is dominated by a large depiction of Saint Christopher; the ossuary contains 16th-century frescoes. Together, the church and ossuary reveal different aspects of the local cultural heritage.
The Ponte della Merla is a medieval stone bridge with three arches, spanning a gorge in the Maggia. It is listed among the canton’s protected cultural properties. The old bridge also provides a crossing to the opposite side of the valley, combining a notable structure with a practical function in the valley.
Local restoration work brought an old mill and three chestnut-drying huts back into use; old vines were also renewed and young chestnut trees planted. In 2007, dilapidated chapels along the path to Monte Scinghiöra and a rustico in Brontallo were renovated for agrotourism. The work involved different elements of the cultural landscape, from agricultural buildings to chapels.
Valley Trail or Climbing Area?
The Sentiero Lavizzara runs along the Maggia on the valley floor, with flat sections and gentle climbs. This places two different types of terrain side by side: stairways between the houses on the hillside and stretches on the valley floor alongside the river. If you include the Sentiero in your plans, check trail conditions locally.
There are also specific points of reference for climbing: Brontallo’s climbing areas are spread across three separate cliffs, with more than 60 routes in total. The El Cat sector has 20 routes graded from 6a to 7c+. From the village car park, you can reach the El CAT climbing wall by following the path towards Margoneggia and continuing along the approach trail; the walk takes about 20 minutes. The approach time depends on conditions and equipment. Check current route conditions and local guide updates on grades before setting out.
Maiensäss and Alpine Pasture Above the Village
The Maiensäss of Margoneggia lies on a sunny ridge with panoramic views. Above Brontallo, Alp Spülüi is situated at an altitude of around 1,800 metres. It is still grazed by about a hundred goats; this activity may vary by season. Together, these named places offer a glimpse of different parts of the cultural landscape around Brontallo: the Maiensäss on the ridge and the higher alpine pasture where goats are kept.
