Coldrerio combines a nature park in an urban setting with a layered local history. At Parco del Paü, spacious areas for recreation and play meet natural features with an educational purpose; at the same time, churches, historic buildings and a Passion tradition that has been observed for more than 75 years shape the character of the village. For those looking for a holiday rental, Coldrerio offers several distinct interests: nature and archaeology, architectural history, and an event tied to Holy Week.
Coldrerio is a municipality in Switzerland, in the canton of Ticino. It belongs to the Mendrisio subdistrict in the Mendrisio district. In southern Ticino, it lies close to the Swiss-Italian border; Chiasso is around four kilometres away as the crow flies.
Nature in the village and the forest reserve
Parco del Paü is a nature park of archaeological interest in the urban area of the municipality of Coldrerio. It offers the community spacious areas for recreation and play, as well as natural features with an educational purpose. Its terraced amphitheatre is reminiscent of the former peat bog.
The Valle della Motta forest reserve extends beyond Coldrerio and includes areas in the municipalities of Novazzano, Coldrerio and Mendrisio. Its landscape includes forests, ponds, wetlands, streams, meadows and fields. The difference from Parco del Paü is geographical: the park is in Coldrerio’s urban area, while the reserve spans several municipalities. This places a local park and a forest reserve with several landscape types side by side as distinct nature attractions.
Local history and architecture
Coldrerio was first mentioned in 852 under its then name, Caledrano. On the southeastern edge of the village, the remains of Castello di Coldrerio are incorporated into a residential building; the castle was first mentioned in 1223. Palazzo Beccaria is a grand country house dating from the 16th century. Palazzo Cigalini is also among the notable palaces in the Coldrerio area. These buildings represent different historical points of reference and architectural forms, from castle ruins to a country house.
The churches, too, tell of different periods. Monsignor Filippo Archinti, Bishop of Como, consecrated Chiesa San Giorgio on 1 June 1599. Chiesa Sant’Apollonia stands on the site of a medieval church, dedicated to Saint George and first documented in 1275. A sacred building was first mentioned on the site of Chiesa Madonna del Carmelo in 1578. At the time, it was associated with Madonna del Pezoo; only later did it become associated with Madonna del Carmelo. A fresco from a late-medieval chapel has been preserved. The Chapel of the Assumption at Chiesa Madonna del Carmelo is considered Coldrerio’s most artistically significant feature and contains paintings by Pier Francesco Mola.
La Passione di Coldrerio during Holy Week
La Passione di Coldrerio is a tradition that has been observed for more than 75 years. It traditionally takes place on the Wednesday of Holy Week. More than 150 costumed figures take part in the Passion procession, setting off from Chiesa Madonna del Carmelo in the direction of the village centre.
