Riva San Vitale lies on the eastern slope of Monte San Giorgio, at the southern end of an arm of Lake Lugano into which the Laveggio flows. The town combines a long architectural history with activities on the water and trails in the surrounding area. When planning your stay, it is worth considering the cultural sights and lakeside activities as distinct focal points.

Baptistery, churches and local history

The Battistero paleocristiano is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; check opening hours before your visit. A virtual tour offers another way to discover the building. Inside, Romanesque and late Romanesque frescoes depict the life of Christ, from his birth to his crucifixion; one niche is dedicated to the Last Judgment. The historic town center is another special landmark: it is listed in the Swiss ISOS inventory of sites worthy of protection.

The tour Riva San Vitale romana e medievale leads from the baptistery and nearby Chiesa parrocchiale di San Vitale through streets, courtyards and squares to the Oratorio di San Rocco and Palazzo comunale. Access to interior spaces varies from building to building. At the Chiesa parrocchiale di San Vitale, several eras come together: the late Baroque church was built from 1756 to 1759 to a design by Giuseppe Caresana and stands on the remains of an Early Medieval basilica. The relics of Blessed Manfredo SettĂ la, who died in 1217, are kept in a wooden urn beneath the high altar; he is venerated throughout the region. The church also houses works of art and an archaeological collection, most of whose finds come from excavations in and around the baptistery.

The Tempio di Santa Croce also tells a story of art and architectural history. Three paintings, the frescoes on the vault of the main chapel and two altarpieces in the side chapels are attributed to Camillo Procaccini; other paintings and some of the frescoes are by artists from his workshop. The building is attributed to the architect Giovan Antonio Piotti, who came from Vacallo and also worked on Como Cathedral. In the Oratorio di San Rocco, the choir frescoes depicting the four virtues, dating from the early 18th century, were fully restored in the 1970s. The furnishings also include Baroque balustrades and a high altar made of multicolored marble, including marble from Arzo. The protected building was begun around 1665 and probably stands on the remains of an older chapel. Casa Houck, formerly Casa Della Croce, preserves wall frescoes by the Pozzi brothers of Puria di Valsolda, created no later than 1581.

Architecture and cultural activities

Another tour focuses on modern architecture. It links Casa Bianchi by Mario Botta, Casa con studio by Giancarlo Durisch, the Centro scolastico comunale by Aurelio Galfetti, Flora Ruchat-Roncati and Ivo TrĂĽmpy, and the Scuola media area with its palestra doppia. Many of the buildings are private or used for educational purposes and should generally be viewed from the outside. Casa con studio was built in the 1970s as a combination of a home and workplace; its design is strongly shaped by the theme of geometry.

Villa Maderni was built in the mid-18th century for Abbondio Bernasconi. Today it houses Virginia Tech’s Steger Center for International Scholarship, the European center of the US university. The villa was restored for academic, residential and cultural activities. Another cultural hub is Comparto Le Fornaci, a center for ceramics and related arts. Its program includes courses for adults, children and teenagers, open studios, creative activities and guided tours; specific programs and dates vary. Cultural events such as art exhibitions and concerts are regularly held at Palazzo comunale, although the specific program changes. The Sagra del Beato Manfredo Settala is usually celebrated on the last Sunday in January. Confirm the date for your intended year of travel.

Trails, the lake and time outdoors

Parco del Laveggio includes an approximately 11-kilometer walking trail that follows the river from its source in Stabio to its mouth in Riva San Vitale. It is suitable for walks, easy runs and educational outings. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out. For a shorter break outdoors, Parco Rivalago offers another option: the green space, covering about 4,500 square meters, was acquired by the municipality in 2014 and opened to the public in 2015. It is suitable for a short walk, relaxing or taking a break with a view of the Ceresio.

At Lido comunale, you can swim in the lake and enjoy panoramic views from a platform. Swimming is seasonal; outside swimming hours, the lido remains open as a public park. During the swimming season, stand-up paddleboards can be rented at the ticket office to explore the Gulf of Riva San Vitale. Check seasonal availability for your travel dates. Those looking for a challenging hike can climb from the Borgo to the summit of Monte San Giorgio. The hike offers views of the Ceresio and one of Ticino’s UNESCO cultural heritage sites; check the weather and trail conditions before setting out. Rocul has an outdoor fitness area, children’s play equipment, and picnic and barbecue areas. From there, views stretch across Riva San Vitale and Lago Ceresio to Monte Generoso.
