Chiasso is in Ticino, in the Mendrisio district, immediately next to the border with Italy. The town is considered a bridge to nearby Lombardy and a gateway to Mendrisiotto. Cultural venues and trails through green surroundings offer different ways to shape your stay: museums, theatres and architecture take centre stage, while the Penz and other routes draw your attention to forests, vineyards and landscapes. The Parco delle Gole del Breggia, Valle di Muggio and Monte Generoso are also nearby.

Chiasso is considered Switzerland’s southernmost municipality. The formerly independent village of Pedrinate has been part of Chiasso since 1976; Switzerland’s southernmost point lies at boundary stone 75B. This distinctive geographical location makes Chiasso a destination in its own right between Ticino and Lombardy, without requiring any particular sightseeing itinerary.

Cultural venues near the centre

Near the centre, a cultural precinct includes the theatre, the m.a.x. museo and the Spazio Officina. The m.a.x. museo opened on 12 November 2005 on the initiative of the Fondazione Max Huber-Kono. Since 2010, it has been a public institution of the municipality of Chiasso and an ICOM member. The museum focuses on graphic design, design, photography and contemporary visual communication. Its changing exhibitions follow cycles covering graphic design, artistic or historical graphics, and corporate graphics. A fourth cycle explores visual communication in photography every two years.

From Chiasso railway station, it is a ten-minute walk to the m.a.x. museo. Other transport connections listed are bus routes 1, 2 and 511, the cross-border SPT Como CC1 service, and PostBus routes 513, 515 and 517. The Cinema Teatro, Spazio Officina and Biblioteca comunale are also near the museum.

The Cinema Teatro is used mainly for cultural and artistic activities such as theatre, music, dance and cinema. On 10 August 1934, the municipal authorities approved Americo Marazzi’s project for a venue featuring film screenings as well as theatre and variety shows; the building was inaugurated in 1935. Carlo Basilico designed the ceiling, entrance hall and foyer. The Spazio Officina hosts exhibitions, musical and theatrical performances, festivals, conferences, seminars and workshops.

The Biblioteca comunale is housed in an eclectic villa dating from the early 20th century. Its small tower features bifora windows. As well as being a general library, it specialises in graphics, design and visual communication, and preserves one of Switzerland’s most important ex libris collections. Another architectural highlight is the parish church of San Vitale, built in 1935 to a design by Aristide Conti.

Forest trails and vineyards on the Penz

The educational trail in Parco del Penz passes through a forest of great natural value despite the dense development all around; a small area is home to a wide variety of species. The route includes a restored chestnut grove and a forest classroom suitable for environmental education activities. The trail starts at the Penz sports complex, where there is a bus stop and large parking areas. It is open year-round, approximately 2.4 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of around 150 metres. At a moderate pace, the walk takes about two and a half hours. The route, length and other details may change following maintenance work or changes to the trail; check the route information before your visit.

Another option is the Sentiero delle Guardie. It links the Seseglio plain with the higher trails in Penz Park, then continues to the network of hiking trails in the larger Spina Verde di Como Regional Park. The trail is about 1,300 metres long, has an elevation gain of around 90 metres and includes no challenging climbs. For a longer scenic route, the Itinerario dei parchi del Mendrisiotto starts near Chiasso railway station and is officially signposted. It passes through lush forests and over vineyard-covered hills to panoramic viewpoints.

Vineyards also shape the Penz landscape: Merlot vines are still cultivated in Pedrinate, and vineyards cover the slopes of the Collina del Penz. A themed trail also runs through the vineyards in the Penz area. This landscape can therefore be discovered as part of the local surroundings, not merely as a backdrop to the trails.

Seasonal activities and events

In winter, the Stadio del ghiaccio di Chiasso offers a covered ice rink for hockey and skating; in summer, the rink is open for roller skating. The facility includes a bar and a restaurant. As activities vary by season, check the relevant information for your travel dates. Events along Corso San Gottardo include the jazz festival. The Nebiopoli Carnival features a large masked parade, and Festate is also among the events in Chiasso. Check the dates if you want to plan your trip around one of these events.

Getting there and finding your way around

The rail link to Lugano opened in 1874, followed by the connection to Como in 1876. The development of rail traffic paved the way for the construction of an international railway station in Chiasso in 1932. By road, the Swiss A2 motorway leads to Chiasso, where it continues towards Milan as Italy’s A9. This allows you to plan your trip around different interests: culture and architecture in town, seasonal activities, or time on the trails and in the landscapes of the Penz and Mendrisiotto.
