Muggio’s protected historic town center and hiking trails show two distinct sides of the town. Muggio is a locality in the municipality of Breggia in the Canton of Ticino and the Mendrisio district. If you are looking for a hotel in Muggio, you can plan your trip around hiking, architectural history, or a combination of the two.

Plan Your Hike and Journey

The Giro della Valle di Muggio passes through the characteristic village of Muggio and then continues to the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista da TĂĽr. The route is 8.6 kilometers long, takes 2 hours and 55 minutes, and has 385 meters of elevation gain and loss. Along the way are chestnut forests, Graa, watermills, and Roccoli. The distance, duration, and elevation change give you different measures to use when planning your day; also check local trail conditions before setting out.

The Itinerario Sui declivi del Generoso passes over terraced slopes, pastures, and beech forests. There are few drinking-water sources in the karst landscape, so bring enough water for this itinerary.

The Itinerario Sasso Gordona e Val della Crotta also passes through Muggio. If you plan to take this route, check the opening hours of the individual businesses in advance.

Muggio is accessible by bus. Check the current timetable before travelling so you can include the journey in your day’s plans.

Protected Town Center and Architecture

Muggio’s historic town center is protected to preserve its original urban layout and the morphological, typological, and historical features of its buildings. Stone elements, stucco decorations, arches, and surrounds must be preserved; they may not be plastered over or painted. The preservation rules thus apply both to the townscape and to specific architectural features.

Casa Cantoni-Fontana stands opposite the church in Muggio and was extended at the end of the 18th century to a design by Simone Cantoni. The Cantoni family home was developed into a rural building complex in three construction phases. The Sala dell’architettura is on the ground floor of the Casa and was painted by Domenico Pozzi in 1796. The Casa also contains two oil paintings by Pozzi from around 1778–1780 depicting Simone and Gaetano Cantoni.

The Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Muggio has been documented since 1578, was rebuilt, and has undergone several restorations; the building dating to around 1760 was designed by Giuseppe Fontana. Its features include an ornate façade, Rococo stucco, murals, and paintings. These details bring together a long building history and specific examples of the design of the façade and interior.

The Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista a TĂĽr is a freestanding, single-nave building with a rectangular choir and is mentioned as early as 1582. It has 17th-century stucco decorations and an altar attributed to Domenico Fontana. Other features include an 18th-century scagliola antependium, murals, and several visible votive offerings. Alongside the architecture, different forms of religious furnishing are also central to this building.
