Ponte Tresa is in the Lugano district in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. Tresa Bike, a mountain bike route that returns to Ponte Tresa, begins on the shore of Lake Lugano. There is also the FLP railway and a museum dedicated to railway history. When planning your stay, you can treat these attractions as different highlights: a mountain bike loop, a rail connection to Lugano or a visit to the FLP’s historical collections.

Take the FLP train to Lugano

The FLP S60 line connects Ponte Tresa with Lugano. The stops along the route are Caslano, Magliaso, Magliaso Paese, Agno, Serocca, Bioggio, Bioggio Molinazzo, Cappella-Agnuzzo, Sorengo-Laghetto and Sorengo. On Saturdays, public holidays and in the evenings, trains run every 30 minutes. This gives you a rail connection with several stops between Ponte Tresa and Lugano as an alternative to the cycling route when planning your trip. Check the timetable for your travel dates before setting off.

Tresa Bike and other routes

Tresa Bike is a 20-kilometre mountain bike route from Ponte Tresa to Ponte Tresa. It is rated easy, with a stated duration of 2.10 hours. Check the route conditions before setting off. The loop begins on the shore of Lake Lugano and follows an uphill gravel road through a forest. The route then alternates between climbs and descents, passing through several picturesque villages.

Between Beride and Castelrotto, Tresa Bike partly follows the “Tracce d'Uomo” themed trail. On the return leg, the route follows the River Tresa, which also marks the border with Italy. The riverbanks provide a habitat for fauna and flora. At the end, Lake Lugano in Ponte Tresa invites you to take a break by the water. The route description thus combines forest, villages and riverbanks with the starting point by the lake.

The fourth stage of Lugano Bike offers a different perspective on the route: it returns to Ponte Tresa via Sessa and Ponte Cremenaga on the border with Italy, following the River Tresa. Tresa Bike is explicitly described as a loop starting and ending in Ponte Tresa; this Lugano Bike stage, by contrast, features the named places and river along its route. This lets you choose between a designated loop and a described stage without equating the two routes based on unspecified measures.

For routes in the Lugano area, the Bike-Shuttle Ticino transports bicycles in a minibus along challenging climbs. The service also offers the option of renting a bike or being accompanied by an MTB guide. These options complement the route information with transport, rental and guided-ride possibilities.

The FLP Museum and church art

The Museum of Ferrovie Luganesi SA (FLP) opened in 2012 on the ground floor of Casa Zampini in Ponte Tresa. It is a ten-minute walk from the railway terminus; check current access arrangements before your visit. The museum displays historical railway documents, plans, projects and photographs, as well as regulations, measuring instruments, machines, tools, train components and utility systems. The exhibits on display may change.

The Chiesa di S. Bernardino da Siena also features specific art-historical details. A niche on the counter-façade contains a Pietà fresco from the Luini school, dating to the early 16th century. One chapel is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua and has a Baroque altar and frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint Bernardino, dated to 1738. The Crivelli family had the chapel built in 1612. The dedication to Anthony and the Bernardino scenes therefore refer to different saints; this distinction helps to identify the chapel’s features.
