Mezzovico can be explored through different travel interests: themed and hiking trails provide practical route information, while churches and historical landmarks reveal different layers of history. When looking for a hotel in Mezzovico, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to learn about the Strada Regina, plan a hike or explore local architectural and cultural history?
The Strada Regina and trails in the countryside
The Strada Regina themed trail runs through Mezzovico-Vira, one of the eleven municipalities along the route. The trail is over 30 kilometres long in total and today follows official routes in the cantonal hiking trail network. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the local section from the route as a whole: Mezzovico-Vira lies along a longer themed trail that extends well beyond the municipality.
A hiking route in the Lugano Region through the Monti di Mezzovico leads through the Valle Cusello, along a forest road and past typical alpine pastures. The “A spasso per i boschi” hike connects Mezzovico and Sigirino over 15.8 kilometres. It is listed as taking 6 hours and 30 minutes on foot, with an ascent of 1,369 metres. The distance, walking time and ascent provide a practical timeframe for planning your day; check the latest route information before setting off.
Churches and art history
San Mamete is surrounded by a park of the same name and is recognised by the federal authorities as architectural heritage. The church dates from the 12th century, was extended in the 15th century and faces south. Its walls and choir are decorated with frescoes from the Luino school, including depictions of the Crucifixion of Christ, the Last Judgement, the Church Fathers and the Evangelists. The choir also contains a large Crucifixion fresco from 1534, which follows the image type introduced by Bernardino Luini.
Other works of art mark different periods: the frescoes depicting Saints Mamete and Anthony the Abbot at the cemetery gate are dated to 1470–1480. In the second chapel, stucco work from 1614 frames episodes from the lives of Saints Roch and Sebastian. These varied details make San Mamete an interesting focus for travellers who want to explore architecture and religious art together.
There are three churches in Mezzovico: San Mamete, the parish church of S. Abbondio and the Oratorio di Loreto. At S. Abbondio, archaeological evidence reaches far back in time: the finds include Roman cremation burials, and the first stone church is dated to the 7th century. The present complex as a whole was built in the mid-15th century. The parish church is classified as a monument of local and regional importance.
The Oratorio di Sant’Ambrogio al Castello stands on a wooded rocky outcrop in the Mezzovico-Vira area. Built between the 9th and 10th centuries, it is a national historic monument; its late Romanesque wall paintings depict a Majestas Domini. Numerous votive chapels also form part of the municipality’s landscape and are considered historical evidence of local faith.
Local life and traces of agriculture
Piaza du Buteghin is one of the municipality’s public squares. Social and recreational activities take place there throughout the year. Some fountains in Mezzovico-Vira are linked to Ticino’s agricultural history. The restored chestnut woodland areas also tell of past ways of life: they were once essential to providing for the local population.
At Agriturismo La Stala, agricultural experiences and local products are the focus. Participants get to know the farm, prepare Luganiga or fresh pasta, and sample the products they have made. Guided farm visits with opportunities to meet the animals are organised for children; check current times and availability before your trip. The offerings also include a farm shop selling, among other things, fresh eggs, jams, pickled vegetables, pancetta, bacon and Luganiga, as well as Ticinese and vegetarian cuisine.
