Bogno lies at an altitude of around 973 metres in the eastern Val Colla, on the upper reaches of the Cassarate. Hiking trails, a mountain bike circuit and two churches with distinct building histories give visitors several specific points of interest to consider when planning a trip.

Mountain Scenery and Village Character

Bogno is a district of the city of Lugano in the canton of Ticino and belongs to the Val Colla quarter. Its compact village centre is characterised by closely packed stone houses and cobbled lanes; this settlement pattern reflects the traditional building style of mountainous Ticino. One of the Cassarate’s main sources is also located in the Bogno area.

The valley terrain is mountainous: to the east, the 1,816-metre-high Monte Bar bounds the area, and to the west, the 1,637-metre-high Monte Caval Drossa. Both mountains mark the natural boundary with Val Capriasca. This location makes Bogno both a village in the valley and a starting point for excursions into an area shaped by mountain ridges.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

Bogno is considered a starting point for several hiking trails connecting Val Colla with Capriasca and with mountain passes towards Italy, including Passo di San Lucio. The different routes also help when choosing a specific outing: the scenic Val Colla Bike is a mountain bike circuit that starts and finishes in Bogno. The Towards Monte Bar hiking route begins in the village and ends with the descent via Alpe Musgatina towards Corticiasca.

Capanna San Lucio lies on the slopes of Gazzirola at Passo del San Lucio. From there, the view extends across Val Colla and to the nearby Italian Val Cavargna. The hut can be reached from Bogno-Certara in about 1 hour and 30 minutes; the actual duration depends on conditions. This estimate is for Bogno-Certara as a shared starting point.

Two Churches, Two Building Histories

The Chiesa di S. Rocco is a late-medieval building that was expanded in 1780. Its bell tower combines a Baroque upper storey with an octagonal dome. Its building history can therefore be traced through two specific features: the 18th-century expansion and the Baroque finish of the tower.

The Chiesa dei SS. Pietro e Paolo stands above the village in a scenic location. It was expanded and remodelled in 1662. Notable features include a stucco altar with a wooden ciborium dating from the 17th century. The churches have distinct features: at S. Rocco, the late-medieval origins and tower structure stand out; at SS. Pietro e Paolo, the building alterations and stucco altar are noteworthy.

A Stay at Altitude

Capanna San Lucio has 22 sleeping places and showers with hot water. The hut thus combines its location at the pass with practical overnight and washing facilities. If these amenities are important for your plans, confirm them before your visit. The approximate walking time from Bogno-Certara helps with planning; the altitude and route remain part of your own decision about the outing.
