Maroggia brings together a compact village history, sacred art, milling heritage and water-related attractions. The historic centre developed behind the parish church.

Village Centre and Early History

Maroggia is a small, compact village whose historic centre developed behind the parish church. Documents dating from around 724, as well as other records from 962 and 966, attest to continuous settlement. Archaeological finds also suggest that the village was settled in ancient times. During extension work at the former Villa Petrucci, a sandstone slab bearing a North Etruscan alphabet came to light in 1906; a stele with a Roman inscription was found in 1926.

The village’s former livelihoods also tell the story of a different Maroggia: its inhabitants originally made their living from fishing and charcoal production.

Parish Church and Oratory

The Chiesa Parrocchiale Santi Pietro e Paolo was built from 1635 onwards and consecrated on 18 May 1643. Its interior comprises a single-nave church, a rectangular presbytery and two side chapels. The choir features stucco work; the raised statues of Saints Peter and Paul, like the stucco work, were created by Giovanni Antonio Colomba of Arogno.

Another place of worship is the Oratorio della Beata Vergine della Cintura. It stands on a natural terrace surrounded by lush woodland, offering a 360-degree panorama of the mountains and Lake Ceresio. The oratory is listed as a Category B cultural property for Maroggia in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property Protection; the cantonal list is dated 1 January 2026. Every year on 15 August, the feast of the Beata Vergine della Cintura is solemnly celebrated there. The specific programme may vary.

Milling History and Contemporary Art

Mulino Maroggia is a family-run milling business founded by Michael Stadlin in the final years of the 19th century. Its oldest section once housed the rice mill. In 2017, this part of the building was renovated and converted into a larger, more practical warehouse for packaged products. The business also includes a space of around 170 square metres for visitors and events.

Another cultural highlight was the Mostra Triennale di Maroggia: the municipality organised its third edition in 2021. The event followed a three-year cycle; that year, the exhibition transformed the area of Maroggia into an urban art gallery.

Torrente Mara and Swimming

Completed in 2021 and 2022, the revitalisation of the Torrente Mara restored an ecological corridor between the lakeside area and Val Mara. It is intended for small land and aquatic animals. The project also improved the area’s landscape and recreational qualities for local residents. Along the Torrente Mara, information panels show the state of the area before and after the renaturalisation works.

For swimming, the Lido comunale di Maroggia offers supervised swimming in the river and the lake.
