Mühledorf is a village in the municipality of Buchegg in the canton of Solothurn. Its townscape brings together well-preserved historic buildings and the landscape of the Mühletal Valley. In the lower part of the village, old houses cluster around the large mill, where the stream meets the meadows. The relationship between buildings and their surroundings is therefore as much a part of the village’s character as its individual structures.

Village Structure and Landscape

An assessment in the Federal Inventory highlights the architectural and historical qualities of the townscape. Well-preserved timber-frame buildings with plank construction and half-timbered buildings retain their original functional connection to the surrounding cultural landscape. These two building types make the historic development tangible: they are not merely individual old houses, but part of a townscape connected to the landscape.

The Mühletal Valley also shapes the impression of Mühledorf. The valley is narrow and rich in water, and groups of trees blend harmoniously into the valley scenery. For further geographical context, the former municipal boundary provides a useful reference: the former municipality covered sections of the Molasse hills of the Bucheggberg and parts of the Limpachtal plain. It included the wooded heights around Chalgen and Eichiberg, as well as the heights of Aspli and Wallisberg. The Mühlebach stream crossed this area from southwest to northeast through a relatively narrow valley hollow.

Hiking and Views

The Lohn–Mühledorf–Messen hike takes approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes. The route leads from the Wolftürli settlement via Mühledorf to Aetigkofen. Along the way, open hilltops offer views of the Jura and across the Swiss Plateau as far as the Alps. The route thus combines views of different landscapes with a clear time frame for planning. Check route conditions before setting out.

The Mühletal Valley and its heights reveal two different sides of the landscape: water and groups of trees shape the narrow valley, while the open heights offer views across wider regions. Those interested in the interplay between the village and its surroundings will therefore find both a local perspective in Mühledorf and a broader view along the hike.

Building History and Local Traditions

The Reformed Church of Mühledorf stands on the site of the Chapel of St. Margaret, which was first mentioned in a document in 1338. The church is a striking work by master builders and carpenters from the Bucheggberg, described as unparalleled. In stylistic terms, it is classified between Classicism and Art Nouveau. The chapel’s historic site and the church’s later architectural classification give it a dual significance in the history of the village.

The Bockstein quarry also tells the story of the former use of local resources. Sandstone was once extracted there for the bases of the Bernese houses and for stove plates. Visits are possible by appointment, so please arrange this before your visit. The Mühledorf oil mill has been operational since 1774 and remains so today. Its long history adds another aspect of local tradition to the story of buildings and raw materials.

Swimming Pool and Visit Planning

The seasonal Mühledorf swimming pool has a 25-metre swimming pool, a 2-metre diving board and a warm-water shower. It also has a compact children’s area with a paddling pool and a playground. Since the pool is open seasonally, check its opening dates before travelling. This makes it easy to include a visit to the swimming pool in your plans, while the hike, building history and landscape offer other ways to experience the village.
