Historic castle traces and a circular hike lasting several hours give a stay in Buchegg different focal points. The Buechibärger circular hike takes four to five hours and can be shortened using connecting paths. This helps with planning your day: you can set aside the hike as a separate excursion and make time alongside it for history or regional specialities.
Castle and tower: traces from different eras
The Buechischlössli stands on the site of a medieval castle complex. The Solothurn authorities had the tower built in 1546; for 250 years, it served, among other things, as a prison. Today, only a few sections of wall remain of the once mighty Buchegg castle complex. Its history probably dates back to the 11th century: the castle was likely built on the crest of a ridge in the Bucheggberg. During the Burgdorf War of 1383, troops of the Counts of Neu-Kyburg burned the complex down; it was not rebuilt afterwards. The tower and sections of wall thus tell of different historical traces at the same site.
The circular hike as a separate excursion
The Bucheggberger, also known as the Buechibärger circular hike, is a themed trail and part of the Solothurn Forest Walks. It starts and ends at the car park by Buchegg Castle in Kyburg-Buchegg. Allow four to five hours for the full loop; various connecting paths offer shorter options. This lets you adjust the distance to the time available without having to combine the circular hike with another long activity. The trail can be walked year-round. Check the weather and surface conditions before setting out.
Hilly landscapes and scenic views
The Bucheggberg is a ridge of hills about 650 metres high, located mostly in the canton of Solothurn. Its cultural landscape is a mosaic of forest and fields, compact farming villages, hedges and copses. The Mülitäli is home to one of the few stream courses in the Swiss Plateau that remains almost untouched by development. The Buechibärger circular hike offers views of the Jura and the Bernese Alps. Another viewpoint is located by Buchegg Castle: from there, the view extends across the Limpach Valley and, in good weather, over the wide Swiss Plateau as far as the Alps. The different descriptions of the views give you more than one reason to include the landscape and ridges in your plans.
Cheese, vineyard and on-site brewery
Regional specialities also offer different highlights. A small vineyard lies on the south-facing slope below Buchegg Castle. Buchegg is home to the only cheese dairy in the Buechibärg where cheese is still made; it produces several of its own varieties. The Bad Kyburg has an on-site brewery, «Buechibärger Bier». Tours of the brewery are available on request; confirm the current arrangements in advance. The vineyard and cheese dairy complement the themes of the hike, while the brewery tour is a separate activity that needs to be checked in advance.
Plan your holiday apartment and days out
When looking for a holiday apartment in Buchegg, you can first decide whether the circular hike or historical and culinary discoveries will be the main focus. If you plan to walk the full loop, allow a longer block of time for the excursion; the connecting paths offer a shorter alternative. A postbus route goes directly to Buchegg. Check the timetable for your travel date and coordinate your journey with your planned activities.
