Hessigkofen is a village in the municipality of Buchegg in the canton of Solothurn. It lies at 589 metres above sea level on a ridge south of the Bibern Valley, in the Bucheggberg region of the Solothurn Plateau. The compact rural settlement and the open Hessigkoferhöhe give the village two clearly distinguishable features: historic architectural forms shape the village centre, while from the heights the view extends across the Bibern Valley to the Jura. This lets you shape your stay around your own interests, with architecture, landscape and walks as specific themes.
Rural Village Centre and Architectural History
Hessigkofen is laid out as a compact rural settlement on and along the hillside ridge. The buildings are aligned parallel to the slope; timber-frame and half-timbered buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries characterise the settlement, many of them with hipped roofs. The almost entirely rural building style gives the village a high architectural and historical value. The alignment along the ridge makes the connection between the settlement’s layout and the terrain easy to understand: the character comes not only from individual older houses, but from recurring architectural forms throughout the compact settlement.
In the village centre, old, impressive houses stand alongside newer buildings. One building also has a specific inventory classification: the Gasthof Sternen is listed as a Category B property in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National and Regional Significance. Hessigkofen’s architectural and historical interest thus ranges from its rural settlement pattern to a specific individually classified building.
Elevated Setting, Views and Walks
The Hessigkoferhöhe is one of the Molasse hills of the Bucheggberg and is broad and open. Aspli and Wallisberg flank its southern side. From the Hessigkoferhöhe, the view extends across the Bibern Valley to the Jura. Those who enjoy walking will find opportunities nearby for long, leisurely walks across fields and through the forest. The views and walks appeal to different interests: from the heights, the gaze turns to the distance, while on foot the fields and wooded stretches take centre stage.
Cup Marks on Two Erratic Boulders
Fuchsenstein is a large erratic boulder with 26 well-preserved cup marks. The erratic boulder known as «Erratischer Block» has six cup marks, some of which are particularly well defined. Comparing them brings out different details: at Fuchsenstein, the number and good state of preservation of the cup marks stand out; at «Erratischer Block», it is the distinctive shape of some of them. For visitors interested in geological formations, these details offer different points of focus.
By Bike or for a Workshop
According to its route sequence, the Bucheggberg cycling tour passes through Hessigkofen and is marked with the red signs of Veloland Switzerland. Before setting off, check the route, the signage and the route conditions. This gives you a specific connection to the area for a cycling tour, distinguishing it from the long walks focused on fields and forest.
Tisch-Schmitte in Hessigkofen offers team events and workshops. This is another possible focus alongside architectural history and the landscape. Whether you are more interested in architectural styles, views of the Jura, a cycling tour or a workshop, Hessigkofen brings these themes together with its distinctive village character and open, elevated setting.
