Hubelstein is the largest cup-marked stone in the canton of Solothurn. Fifteen cup marks are visible on its surface, arranged in three groups—a striking detail in a region stretching along the Bucheggberg hill range. The district is bounded by the Limpach Valley to the southeast and the Aare to the north. Buchegg is its main town.

The rural character is shaped by gentle hills, beech forests, meadows and fields. Old farmhouses, granaries, and former municipal and school buildings also define the local landscape. If you look carefully while out and about, you may spot cattle, sheep, horses, birds of prey and woodpeckers in the surrounding area.

Exploring Bucheggberg on foot

The Bucheggberg circular hike, also known as the Buechibärger circular hike, is a themed trail and part of the Solothurn Forest Hikes. Allow four to five hours for the route. It starts and ends at the car park next to Buchegg Castle in Kyburg-Buchegg. As the access point may change, it is worth checking local information before setting out.

If you would rather explore Bucheggberg on two wheels, you’ll get a different perspective on the landscape and surroundings: the “Rund um den Buechibärg” cycling tour offers views of the Alps, the Jura and the Seeland. Another described cycling route in upper Bucheggberg leads from the Mülital through forests and fields to the Egg viewpoint in Aetigkofen. In good weather, you can even see the Bernese Alps from there. The viewpoints and directions of the views differ, offering a contrast between a hike with a specific destination along the way and a cycling tour with a wide panorama.

Chapels, a church and a castle museum

The history of the buildings can also be read in individual sites. The Reformed Church of MĂĽhledorf stands on the site of the Chapel of St Margaret, first mentioned in a document in 1338. The small church at Balm was originally a medieval chapel of the Holy Trinity; its founding was undoubtedly connected with Balmegg Castle. The oldest archaeologically verified parts date from the Early Middle Ages. The chapel is reached by climbing 260 steps; the bottom section is a surfaced field path. Arrangements must be made to obtain a key to the interior.

The tower of Buchegg Castle houses a local history museum with a permanent exhibition on rural domestic culture. Temporary exhibitions focus on the cultural heritage of Bucheggberg and the district’s decorative arts and crafts; their themes change. Check opening hours and visiting arrangements before your visit. Together, the churches, archaeological traces and museum offer different ways to explore the region’s history: through a building site, surviving older architectural features and everyday life in rural homes.
