Emmetten is situated on an elevated pre-Alpine terrace above the southern shore of Lake Lucerne. The municipality stretches from the lakeshore to the summit of the Schwalmis; prominent mountains above and around the village include the Niderbauen Chulm at 1,923 metres and the Oberbauenstock at 2,117 metres. The municipality is in the canton of Nidwalden, on the cantonal road between Beckenried and Seelisberg, and is part of the Klewenalp–Lake Lucerne recreation area. When planning your visit, you can choose from forest trails, winter tours, activities around the Stockhütte and a historic work of art in the Heiligkreuz Chapel.
Hiking, wildlife watching and forest trails
Various hiking and biking routes run through dense forest. The Emmetten Wildlife Observation Trail is listed as a 10.95-kilometre hike of moderate difficulty. Along the trail, 16 panels provide information about native animals and twelve different bird species. There are route options with hiking times of three to four and a half hours: from Niederbauen to StockhĂĽtte, or via Heitliberg to Klewenalp. The actual duration depends on the route you choose and the conditions.
A guided wildlife-watching tour can be booked from the Niederbauen mountain station. At Alp Schwändiport, it includes a break with more wildlife watching through binoculars; the schedule may vary. This makes it possible to distinguish the Wildlife Observation Trail, a longer hike with information panels, from a guided tour with a wildlife-watching break.
The Goldi Gwundernasenweg Emmetten is a family-themed trail: use your smartphone to listen to a story and solve related riddles. The free circular walk takes about an hour. It starts at the Volg on the village square, passes the Niederbauen cable car and returns to the village square via the Höhenweg. Alongside the multi-hour options on the Wildlife Observation Trail, this offers a much shorter circular walk. The Goldi Route – Tour 926 is a separate route, described as a circuit for a family day trip or a leisurely e-bike tour.
Another named hike, “From the Spring to the Lake,” starts at the valley station of the Emmetten–Stockhütte gondola lift at Dorfstrasse 28. The Natural Bike Park Emmetten has around three kilometres of forest trails. About 30 colour-coded signs explain route choices and riding technique. The Bikeboard route offers a different experience: it runs from Stockhütte to Emmetten, with long straight sections and tight turns; along the way, there are views of Lake Lucerne. Operating conditions may vary.
Winter tours and activities at StockhĂĽtte
The Stockhütte–Emmetten sledging run is 4.77 kilometres long, rated easy and takes about one hour and 31 minutes. It depends on snow and operating conditions. The Schattigenstock snowshoe tour is 2.34 kilometres long and designated an easy winter hike; snow and route conditions are also key here.
The Emmetten Archery Park offers a course in wooded terrain near the StockhĂĽtte mountain station; seasonal availability may change. The StockhĂĽtte treetop walk has platforms in the forest and a large net. Access is seasonal. These activities add more ways to spend time in the forest alongside the longer hikes, without requiring the same type of route.
The Nidwalden Beer Trail is a seasonal, bookable experience that runs from Klewenalp to Stockhütte. It includes four tasting stops, a three-course meal and an underground refrigerator in the heart of nature. The specific menus may change. The Emmetten Dorfmärcht, featuring a cattle drive from the alpine pastures, takes place every year in September. Numerous market stalls sell homemade regional products and handicrafts; individual vendors may vary.
Local history and getting around
The Emmetter Totentanz, an oil-on-wood panel painting comprising 23 almost square panels, is housed in the Heiligkreuz Chapel in Emmetten. The work was created around 1710 for the ossuary, which had just been built at the time. The village's history goes back much further: the name Emmetten appears in the 1150 land register of Engelberg Abbey. In 1275, Cunrat von Emmetten is named as a witness in a dispute between Engelberg Abbey and the people of the Uri alpine region. According to local tradition, the first resident settled at Ryters, a meadow enclosed by Brennwald, and went to church at St. Jakob on Sundays.
A publicly accessible information point is available in Emmetten to help you find your way around. The Emmetten–Stockhütte gondola lift has six-person cabins; the journey takes about ten minutes. Operating details may change, so it is worth checking the departure times before your trip. For the Goldi Gwundernasenweg Klewenalp–Stockhütte, the described connection runs from Stockhütte by gondola lift to Emmetten, followed by a PostBus connection from Emmetten to Beckenried. These connections may vary seasonally, so check the timetable for your visit.
