Beckenried stretches for five kilometres along the southern shore of Lake Lucerne; the old village centre lies just above the lake level. In the larger southern part of the municipality, the varied mountain landscape rises steeply above the lakeshore. The Beckenried–Klewenalp aerial cableway takes visitors to Klewenalp, 1,600 metres above sea level, in ten minutes. PostBus services from Stans railway station go as far as Beckenried Post; Beckenried can also be reached by boat from Lucerne or Brunnen. Check the current timetables for your travel dates.

Hiking around Risleten

The Beckenried–Risleten Gorge–Treib hike passes through woodland and beneath rock ledges, leading from Beckenried through or above Risleten Gorge to Treib. There is a boat connection from Treib back to Beckenried; check the current timetable when planning your return. Another route description is provided by the seventh stage of the Waldstätterweg: it first follows the lakeshore road to Risleten and then climbs through the gorge. The Waldstätterweg is signposted in both directions along its entire length as SwitzerlandMobility regional route no. 98. Trail conditions may vary after rain.

The gorge is also the subject of a nature tour covering dinosaur tracks at the quarry, Risleten Gorge and the local geology. If you would like to include a tour in your plans, check its availability in advance. This lets you experience the landscape on foot and explore its geology and traces of the past in greater depth—as two different ways of discovering the same area.

On Klewenalp: climbing garden and via ferrata

The family-friendly «Ergglen» climbing garden is on Klewenalp and can be reached on foot from the mountain station in about 30 minutes. The well-protected routes range in difficulty from 4a to 7a. Children can balance on boulders and hide in caves; there is also a fire pit for grilling or picnicking. The climbing garden is unsupervised, and visitors must bring their own equipment. These are important points to consider when planning, especially if climbing is part of a day trip.

The Klewenalp via ferrata runs through the rocks in the Ergglen area. Ladders, footholds and iron pegs guide climbers through the via ferrata terrain; the route is estimated to take around 20 minutes. Seasonal and weather-related access restrictions may apply, so check the conditions before your visit. From the via ferrata in the Ergglen area, you can enjoy views of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding mountains, including Brisen, Niederbauen and Rigi.

More activities and winter days

The Klewenalp-StockhĂĽtte winter sports area offers skiing, snowboarding, winter hiking trails and snowshoe trails. There is also a nine-kilometre toboggan run and two magic carpets for beginners in winter sports. Available activities depend on snow conditions and operating status. The cable car from Beckenried to Klewenalp takes ten minutes; a quick look at the timetable can help you coordinate your journey with your planned activities.

For a combination of exercise and food, the Nidwalden Beer Trail is a 7.15-kilometre themed route from Klewenalp to StockhĂĽtte, rated as moderate. The concept includes four tasting stations, a three-course menu and an underground refrigerator in the middle of nature. Menu details may change. Another local speciality is produced at Alp Unterstock: the traditional alpine farm in Beckenried makes alpine cheese, grilling cheese and Mutschli. The cheese is sold directly at the alp; it was also available at the 2025 edition of the alpine cheese market in Beckenried.

Village walk, culture and food

The smarTrail is an interactive, approximately one-hour walk through Beckenried. At ten stations, it combines history, culture and discoveries; access is via a QR code at the boat station. Before your visit, check that you can access the digital content. Private village tours can be booked. They visit grottoes, monuments, the church, squares and houses, offering insights into village culture and the past. The Ridli pilgrimage chapel is a nationally protected cultural monument.

For another activity in the village, Minigolf Arena Beckenried has a 16-hole course for families, groups and companies, as well as an on-site snack bar. It is centrally located and accessible by public transport; seasonal opening hours and prices may change. See-Distillerie Beckenried has a tradition spanning more than 50 years. Tours of its production rooms and barrel storage include tastings of vodka, gin and American-style whiskey; the selection may vary. With these different options, you can shape your stay around the landscape, outdoor activities, local history or regional produce.
