Wolfenschiessen lies in the lower Engelberg Valley between Stans and Engelberg, at an elevation of about 510 metres above sea level. The municipality also includes alpine areas such as Arni, Bannalp, Ober- and Untertrüebsee, and Sinsgäu. Its highest point is Rotstöckli on the Titlis, at 2,901 metres. The geographical area therefore extends from the village in the valley to high-altitude mountain regions—a useful guide when planning hikes, excursions and the right length of stay.
Mountain Areas and Hiking Trails
Two cable cars provide access to the mountain areas, each with different operating schedules. The Fell–Chrüzhütte cable car, “s’blaiä Bähnli,” runs year-round except during maintenance periods; the ride takes 10 minutes. The Fellboden–Bannalpsee cable car, “s'rotä Bähnli,” operates in summer, approximately from mid-May to the end of October, and takes 8 minutes. Operating times and service interruptions may change, so check the details before your trip.
The Walenpfad leads from the Brunni area above Engelberg to the Bannalp area above Wolfenschiessen. The 11.2-kilometre route is graded T2 and was named one of Switzerland’s twelve most beautiful hikes by Switzerland Tourism and the Swiss Hiking Trails association for its panorama. The Kapellenweg offers a different kind of hike: this themed trail starts and ends in Wolfenschiessen, is 17.87 kilometres long and is graded as a difficult circular route. Eight chapels give it its theme; along the way, you can enjoy views of the Engelberg Valley. When choosing between the two trails, consider not only their different lengths, but also their grading and route.
On Bannalp, walking trails wind through alpine meadows and peaceful landscapes. There are also hikes for families and leisurely walkers, as well as more challenging mountain tours for experienced mountaineers. In winter, the Bannalp snowshoe trail is an easy circular walk through the winter forest. It passes slightly above Bannalpsee and heads towards the Urnerstaffel mountain inn.
Riddles, Herbs and Cultural Heritage
The Zwärgliweg starts on Bannalp and winds for about 3 kilometres through the mountain landscape. Seven riddle stations combine exercise and nature with the story of Bannalpi and puzzles to solve. The walking time is around 90 minutes, not including time spent at the stations. This lets you distinguish the time spent walking from the time spent solving the riddles.
Tirligartä also combines nature with informative details: the herb trail features around 100 herbs, and lists describing the plants are available at the entrance. The public herb garden has an adjacent barbecue area and a play fountain. Those interested in local history can visit the Hechhuis in Wolfenschiessen. Built in 1586, it has a knights’ hall and a roof turret. The building is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.
The Wolfenschiessen Alpine Farmers’ Brotherhood was founded in 1675 in honour of St Wendelin, the patron saint of farmers. It preserves old customs and traditions and recognises the work of farmers and alpine herders. Alongside the trails and mountain areas, farming traditions are therefore also part of the local heritage.
Barbecue Areas and Seasonal Activities
There are eight barbecue areas beside the outlet of Bannalpsee. From Wolfenschiessen, you can reach the Brändlen fire pit by cable car, followed by a walk of about 10 minutes. There are two well-maintained fire pits, firewood, 15 seats and a toilet. As information about visitor facilities may change, check the current conditions before your visit.
Along the Walenpfad, the mountain inn on Alp Oberfeld serves its own products; the selection may vary by season. Peacocks goats are also available on the alp for goat trekking. The goats carry a picnic in pack saddles while you hike. Nearby, at Neufallenbach farm in Grafenort, there is a botanical medicinal herb garden with more than 300 medicinal plants. It is freely accessible every day during the growing season.
