Above the village lie the ruins of Château d’Asuel; on the “A l’assaut du col des Rangiers” hiking trail, the castle comes back into view as you emerge from the forest. Asuel is best explored through its medieval heritage and hiking trails. The area also offers a viewpoint overlooking the Vosges and Ajoie, as well as cultural and leisure activities. When planning your stay, it is worth considering these separately: the trails differ in route and length, while the history of Château d’Asuel and the Col des Rangiers each offer their own points of interest.
Castle ruins and medieval heritage
Château d’Asuel was built in the 11th century. At the archaeological site, remains of the perimeter wall, the foundations of a round tower, traces of an elongated building and the ruins of the keep have been preserved. Excavations uncovered ceramics from the 13th and 14th centuries, along with medieval and modern-era coins. These finds add evidence from different periods to our understanding of the site; the surviving structures also provide tangible clues to its former appearance.
The setting is also part of the character of the castle site: to the east it is naturally protected by a steep slope, and to the south by sheer cliffs. Château d’Asuel is currently privately owned. Check the access conditions again before planning a visit.
Hiking trails and views
The “A l’assaut du col des Rangiers” hiking trail descends steeply through the forest to the Erveratte stream and follows it to Asuel. As you emerge from the forest, you can see the ruins of Château d’Asuel. Another 11-kilometre forest hike starts at the car park by the municipal building. It first follows the main road, then heads towards the forest and Clos du Fendu. On the first route, the descent, stream and view of the castle are key landmarks; for the second, the distance, starting point and route described are important for planning.
From Grande Roche, at an altitude of 851 metres, you can see the Vosges and Ajoie. The viewpoint is on a rocky outcrop; a table and benches are a few metres away. Climbing is currently not permitted at the Asuel–Grande Roche site. Check this restriction again before your trip if you are planning to climb.
Musée CRAC and regional history
The former chapel of La Caquerelle, at La Caquerelle 8B in Asuel, now houses the Musée CRAC. The chapel was built in 1893, restored in 1968 and 1993, and used as a school from 1935 to 1957. The museum explores the historical and strategic importance of the Col des Rangiers. Exhibits also include the banner of the lords of Asuel and a remnant of the Sentinelle des Rangiers.
Another topic in military history is Fort du Chételat, an anti-tank fortification from the Second World War. It can be reached from car parks 300 metres to the northeast of the structure. Check the visiting and access arrangements again in advance.
Local hamlets, leisure and getting there
The locality of Asuel includes several hamlets and numerous isolated farms. La Malcôte is at an altitude of 661 metres, Les Rangiers at the Col des Rangiers is at 856 metres, and La Caquerelle is on the ridge of Mont-Russelin at 830 metres. These elevations help distinguish the different place names without treating them as a single village centre.
La Caquerelle offers a nine-hole Swin golf course suitable for all ages, as well as an archery course with seven stations, varied targets and different shooting positions. A nine-hole footgolf course above Saint-Ursanne is also available. Seasonal information and booking details may change, so check them before making plans. The Hôtel-Restaurant de la Caquerelle serves regional specialities, Swiss cuisine and local products. You should also check the restaurant’s current offer before your trip.
MOBIJU bus route 76 connects Porrentruy, Courgenay, Asuel and Charmoille. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the timetable, as times and service arrangements may change.
