Coeuve combines historic buildings with a rural setting and varied landscapes for hiking and cycling. The public washhouses are a tangible point of reference: they are part of the heritage and are also linked to two named routes.

Washhouses, Castle and Church

Coeuve’s public washhouses were built in the mid-18th century and are fed by a spring. They were designated a historic monument in 1973. The construction date and later designation mark two distinct stages in their history. The castle was once the seat of the Prince-Bishops of Basel and was used as a summer residence from 1733 to 1793. Several dates are also significant for the church: it was rebuilt in 1825, but its stone tower dates from the mid-13th or early 14th century. Together, the three buildings represent different aspects of Coeuve’s history: a public facility, the castle’s former role and the church’s construction history. The years 1733 to 1793 refer to the castle’s use as a summer residence, not to a construction date. The stone tower dates from the Middle Ages; the washhouses were built in the 18th century, and the church was rebuilt in 1825. This makes it possible to distinguish between their use and construction history.

Hiking and Cycling

Coeuve offers varied landscapes for hiking and cycling. The “Le plat pays” day hike starts at the public washhouses; check trail conditions before setting out. The “Mont de Coeuve Bike” cycling route passes the old washhouses at the beginning. The same washhouses are therefore a point of reference for both activities: the starting point of the day hike and an early section of the cycling route. If you are choosing between the tours, this difference is a practical consideration for planning.

Rural Character and Getting There

Coeuve is an agricultural village in central Ajoie, situated in the broad valley basin of the Coeuvatte, which rises in the village. The fertile surrounding soil shapes the area’s agricultural character. The valley, stream and farming add a distinctly rural perspective to the historic buildings. A regional road runs from Porrentruy through Coeuve to France. Public transport connections to Coeuve are provided by a PostBus route between Porrentruy and Beurnevésin. Check the route timetable for your travel date.
