Morissen combines trails through the alpine pasture landscape with the village church, chapels and milling history. The moderately difficult Morissen circular hike is 6.3 kilometres long and includes 247 metres of ascent and descent. It starts in the village, heads through the alpine pasture landscape towards Giatries, passes through the Sogn Carli forest and returns via Linaus. This makes it possible to plan a circular route with a clear sequence of trails, linking the landscape with named cultural sites.
Hiking Trails and Views
The “Places of Magic – Morissen” hike follows a different route: it runs along the upper edge of the village through meadows towards Giatries and Sogn Carli. The Morissen circular hike, by contrast, also passes through the Sogn Carli forest and returns to the starting point via Linaus. You can add a detour to the Sogn Carli Chapel to this loop. Several benches along the Vella–Morissen circular hike offer views of the mountain range opposite and the entire Val Lumnezia.
The Sogn Carli Chapel stands in a forest clearing above Morissen, on the eastern slope of Piz Mundaun and on the old path from Morissen to Obersaxen. The clearing offers views of the Ruinaulta. The chapel was probably built in the second half of the 17th century. The nave’s murals depict the Last Judgment, Saint Michael weighing souls and the Madonna with an unidentified coat of arms. When checked in August 2026, the S. Carli Chapel was closed; individual visits were not possible at the time. Check current access before setting out.
Church and Village History
The parish church of S. Giachen & S. Philipp stands in the centre of the village and is surrounded by the cemetery. It is open daily from 08:00 to 18:00. The present church building was constructed in 1867/68. A wooden altar structure dating from around 1720, transferred from the old church, preserves a link to the earlier furnishings. The old church or chapel of Morissen is first mentioned in 1345. Together, these dates provide different points of reference for the village’s history, without equating the present building with the older structure.
Mill and Local Cuisine
Guests can enjoy local specialities at Il Mulin; the kitchen uses many regional products from nature-friendly production. These include dishes made with wheat flour grown in Morissen by Ursin Riedi: Il Mulin uses it to prepare, among other things, Spätzli, Bizochels, bread and Capuns. The mill itself also has a local history. It was renovated in 2005 and is now in operation again. The stone mill dating from the 18th century was replaced at its current location in 1945. The mill complex and the kitchen at Il Mulin thus represent different but interconnected aspects of the local offering.
Cycling and Sledging
Cycling routes also pass through Morissen. Via Mundaun 2 runs through the village to Vella. The “Haute Route Mundaun” gravel bike day route starts in Ilanz, is 66 kilometres long and has 1,950 metres of elevation gain; one descent takes it through Morissen and onwards to Vella. Morissen also has an e-mountain bike charging station with a three-socket 230-volt outlet. Technical facilities may change; check the information before your ride.
The Triel–Morissen sledging trail is another option for a sledging trip. Its steady, gentle ascent also makes it suitable for children. The hiking trails, longer gravel bike route and sledging trail offer different ways to experience Morissen on foot, by bike or on a sled.
