Castrisch lies at the entrance to the Ruinaulta, the Rhine Gorge, also known as the “Swiss Grand Canyon.” Ilanz town center is 2.5 kilometers to the east. This means travel planning can take in two distinct sides of the place: the historic village and the landscape along the Rhine.

Village Character and Architectural Styles

The historic center of Castrisch is a large clustered village: farmhouses and residential buildings stand close together along the main thoroughfares, and a large village square is part of the village’s character. Castrisch is listed in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of National Importance. Castrisch is also a Romansh-speaking hamlet.

The farmhouses feature distinctive entrance gateways, known as “bargias,” as well as stables dating from the 17th to the 19th century. The gateways and stables add specific architectural details to the picture formed by the closely spaced houses. Those interested in rural architecture will find more here than just the village’s overall layout: the varied features of the farmhouses also shape the village center.

Via Glion and Stage 7

The Via Glion is around 75 kilometers long and divided into seven stages. It passes through all 13 hamlets of the municipality of Ilanz/Glion and right through the villages. Stage 7 runs from Riein via Sevgein and Castrisch to Ilanz. This makes it easy to distinguish the full route from the specific section that passes through Castrisch.

Along Stage 7, 13 information panels with audio and, in some cases, video content tell stories about notable people, events and buildings along the hiking trail. The content is available in German and Romansh. This section thus connects the route with stories about the places and buildings along the way. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Riverside Landscape and Isla Sut

Official Trail 902 follows the Rhine embankment through the riverside landscape and through an underpass below the railway station into the village of Castrisch. Along the way, the banks of the Rhine alternate with wide-open meadows, while views open up towards the Brigels Mountains. The landscape of the Ruinaulta associated with Castrisch is enjoyed by hikers, bikers and water sports enthusiasts.

The Isla Sut fire pit is located outside the village at the entrance to the Rhine Gorge. It can be reached on foot from Castrisch railway station in around 20 minutes. The fire pit has a barefoot path right beside the Rhine. Seasonal conditions and safety rules apply; take these into account when planning your visit.

Getting There and Getting Oriented

Castrisch is served by the Rhaetian Railway on the Chur–Disentis/Mustér line and by the Ilanz–Versam PostBus. The current pedestrian bridge between Schluein and Castrisch was built in 2017. Before setting out on a hike, check current trail conditions; conditions along the Rhine can vary seasonally.
