Andiast lies at an altitude of about 1,178 meters in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and is part of the municipality of Breil/Brigels. The Brigels–Waltensburg–Andiast ski area offers 40 kilometers of groomed slopes and includes Andiast. There are also hiking trails that make Andiast a destination, starting point, or stop on a longer route. This gives you two clear options when planning your trip: winter sports in the shared ski area or hikes of varying lengths.
Ski Area and Multi-Day Routes
The Via Glion is around 75 kilometers long, comprises seven stages, and passes through all 13 localities of the municipality of Ilanz/Glion. The stages connected with Andiast include Siat–Andiast and Andiast–Ilanz. This means that one of these stages ends in Andiast, while the other starts there and leads to Ilanz. The fourth stage of the Senda Sursilvana runs from Brigels via Waltensburg and Andiast to Laax. This makes it possible to distinguish between a hike that starts or ends in Andiast and a longer route that passes through the village. In addition to the multi-day stages, a narrow paved hiking and access road at the end of the village of Andiast leads to the dam and the neighboring village of Panix.
A Hike into Val Ladral
For a single hike, Val Ladral offers a striking change of scenery. From Andiast, it takes about an hour to reach the valley entrance. From there, the trail follows the Ladralbach stream through the forest into the Ladral valley floor, surrounded by mountains and covered in green meadows. The Ladral picnic area is in Val Ladral; a path from Andiast leads there past the old Resgia Gneida sawmill. It can be used approximately from mid-May to the end of October. Conditions and fire regulations may change; check the current rules before your visit.
Village Church, Hillside Setting, and Views
The Catholic parish church of St. Julitta and Quiricus stands in the northeastern part of the village, surrounded by the village cemetery and set back from the village street. The two lower stories of the church tower are believed to have been built around the year 1000, during the Early Romanesque period. Andiast lies on an exposed hillside; most of the houses in the village center were built lengthwise along the main street. From Andiast, there are views of the Signina Range, Piz Mundaun, and the Obersaxen ridge.
Neighboring Waltensburg is home to castle ruins and the Waltensburger Meister & Arcun ds tradiziun Museum, which presents frescoes and local traditions. Along with the ski slopes and hiking trails, village history and regional culture are therefore also options to consider when planning your trip.
