Ladir lies on a sunny terrace in a gently sloping hollow at 1,276 m above sea level. From here, you can look out across the central Surselva. Summer and winter hikes, bike tours in the region and a striking ecclesiastical heritage give the village different appeal for a stay.

Location, landscape and trails

Ladir has plenty of unspoilt nature, suited to summer and winter hikes. The geographical scope is broader for bike tours: in summer, the region around Ladir is suitable for routes ranging from easy to challenging. When planning, you can choose between hikes in the village and a regional bike tour without treating the two as the same offering.

The Via Glion also combines exercise with insights into the surrounding area. Along the first stage, thirteen information boards on the hiking trail tell stories about people, events and buildings, using audio and, in some cases, video. Two panoramic boards complement the stage with views and explanations of the surrounding landscape. The Via Glion follows an old connecting road to Ladir, then continues above the village along a forest path in the direction of Siat.

The fourth stage of the Senda Sursilvana follows a different route: it leads from Siat via Ruschein to Ladir. It then crosses the Val da Cafegn and continues via a short descent to Falera. The stage can be made easier by using public transport. Both the Way of St. James and the Senda Sursilvana pass the Larisch picnic area.

The Larisch picnic area is sheltered at the edge of the forest among larches, above the houses; from there, the view stretches far across the mountains. The Larisch playground is also at the edge of the forest among larches and above the houses, with wide-ranging mountain views. It has a fire pit with wood.

Ecclesiastical heritage in Ladir

The Catholic parish church of St. Zeno is in Ladir and has been under federal protection since 1964. Its architecture can be seen in its east-facing orientation and its single-nave layout without chapels. A recessed choir with a flat end adjoins it. The high altar dates from 1710 and was renovated around 1760. A church in Ladir with the right to collect tithes is mentioned around 840.

The Catholic Bruder Klaus Chapel lies above Ladir and can be reached on foot from the village in just under an hour. According to its inscription, it was built in 1952 by master builder Alois Casutt from Falera, using stones from the surrounding area and the Val Falera. Another named place associated with St. Zeno lies above Schluein: the Stone of Saint Zeno, also called Crap da Sogn Sein, is beside the old road connecting Ladir with Schluein.

A regular event in village life is the Perdanonza, Ladir’s parish feast. It takes place every year on the third Sunday in July and is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Check the specific date for your travel year. The church, chapel and festival represent different connections to the village’s ecclesiastical history and traditions.

Winter: Gonda cross-country ski trail and ski tour

The Gonda cross-country ski trail lies above Ladir in a sunny location with mountain views. Beginners can try an approximately 1 km flat loop, where they can learn and improve both the classic cross-country technique and skating. The 4.3 km trail offers experienced cross-country skiers challenging climbs and fast descents. The options described therefore differ in both length and route profile. Snow conditions and grooming vary by season; check current conditions before setting out to ski.

Another winter option is the ski tour from Crest da Tiarms, which descends to Ladir. Check current mountain conditions before setting out.
