Ruschein lies north of Ilanz on a terrace; the area extends up to 1,900 m above sea level. The surrounding region is mountainous and includes alpine pastures such as Alp da Ruschein, Plaun Grond, Alp Dado and Tarschinas. At the same time, the village’s history tells of a long agricultural tradition: Ruschein is documented as early as 765 and was shaped for centuries by farming and the management of forests, meadows, pastures and alpine grazing areas.
Churches, Chapels and the History of the Church Hill
The church hill in Ruschein was already a place of worship and sacrifice in pre-Christian times. During excavations in 1965, the remains of the walls of a first small church dating from the 7th century were found there. The church, dedicated to Saint George, is part of the site’s long history. In its choir, the star vault features paintings from 1650; the wooden sculpture of Saint George was created at the end of the 15th century. The same church thus brings together works of art from different centuries.
The Chapel of St. Mary also combines clearly described architecture with a specific historical date: it was consecrated with an altar on 19 August 1643. The north-facing chapel consists of a vaulted nave and a narrower, vaulted choir with a three-sided end. It is open daily and freely accessible; check access again before your visit.
The Chapel of St. Anthony has a different architectural form. It was built around 1680 as a hexagonal central-plan structure in a picturesque miniature style. Its curved dome is topped by a lantern; the altar dates from 1635. In contrast to the elongated sequence of nave and choir in St. Mary’s, the Chapel of St. Anthony has a hexagonal floor plan. The two chapels thus offer different architectural points of interest, without requiring a particular walking route.
Frauenberg and the Via Glion
The ruins of Frauenberg Castle stand on a broad ridge southwest of the Church of St. George. Impressive remains of the enclosing wall have survived. The castle may have originated sometime between the 11th and 13th centuries. Public guided tours of the ruins are available for groups of two or more; confirm booking details before your trip.
For those who would like to shift their focus from a single place to a longer hiking route, the Via Glion offers a different way to explore the surrounding area. The approximately 75-kilometre route passes through all 13 districts of the municipality of Ilanz/Glion in seven stages, running right through the villages. The first stage climbs from Ilanz to Ruschein. From there, it continues along the old connecting road to Ladir and then follows a forest path towards Siat.
There are 13 information boards along this first stage, with audio and, in some cases, video content in German and Romansh. If these resources matter for your planning, check the relevant details before setting out. The route combines a specific trail with information in two languages; the description of the first stage also makes clear that it follows different types of paths.
Seasonal Activities in the Surrounding Area
Near Ladir, a marked snowshoe trail runs via Crusch and Cuolms da Ruschein to Alp Muota. It then leads back via Gandatscha and Darpiuns to the parish church of St. Zeno in Ladir. Snow and avalanche conditions vary by season; check them before setting out. Cycling offers another perspective: a bike tour takes you down varied singletrack descents via Ruschein to Ilanz. Trail conditions may vary depending on the season.
Above Ruschein and Ladir, at 1,650 m above sea level, is the seasonal self-service snack hut “Tancadi” Run Giosch. It serves hot and cold drinks and light snacks. As this is a seasonal offering, it is advisable to check opening times and access before your visit.
If your travel dates are still flexible, it helps to distinguish between the village’s historic sights and activities with an explicit seasonal connection: snow and avalanche conditions matter for the snowshoe trail, trail conditions for the biking descents, and the snack hut is seasonal. This makes it easier to plan your trip around the activities that will shape your stay.
