Explore Klosters Serneus through its Walser House, traditional architecture and trails into the mountain landscape. The Nutli HĂĽschi offers a glimpse into the history of Klosters; Serneus complements this focus with old wooden houses and artistically carved house inscriptions. When planning your trip, it is also worth considering different time commitments: from a circular trail to a two-day mountain hike.
Walser House and traditional architecture in Serneus
The Nutli Hüschi is a typical 16th-century Walser house and has been a museum since 1925. It displays old household items, furniture and tools from Klosters and the surrounding area. The collection thus links the historic building with insights into the region’s former everyday life. Guests and locals can also bake bread in the wood-fired oven at the Nutli Hüschi.
In Serneus, old Prättigau houses are decorated with artistically carved house inscriptions. The sun-weathered wooden houses date almost entirely from 1742 to 1745. At Hennägadä, the herb garden and the herb room on the upper floor are accessible around the clock via an outside staircase. Ongoing exhibitions are held there: artists and craftspeople from the region, as well as artists from across Switzerland, display their works and skills. In Klosters Serneus, both the rural heritage and contemporary regional artistic activity are therefore in view.
Hiking trails and time in the mountains
The Wildmännli Trail links existing hiking paths into a circular route through Klosters, Schlappin and Serneus. Another option is Stage 8 of the Klosters Circular Hike: it leads from Saas i. P. through the village of Serneus to Bad Serneus. In Walki, a trail also follows the right bank of the river to the sulphur spring at Bad Serneus.
Those planning to spend more time in the mountains can take a two-day mountain hike around Madrisa, on both sides of the Swiss-Austrian border. The planned walking time is about six hours per day; hiking conditions may vary depending on the season. This time estimate helps you plan the tour as a multi-day undertaking. When there is sufficient snow, the toboggan run at Madrisa is 7.7 kilometres long and descends to Saas.
Madrisa and other options
The Madrisa mountain railway and mountain restaurant are wheelchair accessible. The SchaffĂĽrggli six-seat chairlift also carries skiers using a monoski. Good riding technique, as well as single-track and freeride experience, is required for the Gotschna Freeride Piste. The route is 5.78 kilometres long and has 590 metres of vertical descent. These specific requirements and measurements help distinguish the piste from the hiking and tobogganing options.
The landscape also provides orientation: Klosters lies where several valleys converge. Below Klosters Dorf, the valley narrows before widening again at Serneus, where the village lies on the Landquart. Klosters is characterised by chalet architecture and a cosy atmosphere, and contrasts with the Alpine town of Davos. The centre of Klosters is a spa and winter sports resort.
Getting here and finding your way
The municipality has four railway stations or stops: Serneus, Klosters Dorf, Klosters Platz and Cavadürli. The car-loading station for the Vereina Tunnel is also located in Klosters-Selfranga. PostBus routes connect Klosters with the surrounding municipalities; the Rhätische Bahn is generally used to get here. When planning your trip, the different place and station names can help you identify the address of your intended destination.
