Conters in Prättigau is ideal for a trip where mountain scenery, village life and a longer hike are the main attractions. The municipality stretches from the Landquart across a largely forested slope cut through by several mountain streams to the extensive alpine pastures at Duranna Pass. The pass is 2,117 metres above sea level; a mule track leads from there into the Schanfigg valley. Conters lies above Küblis. Sunny slopes, forests, meadows and streams are all part of the municipality. The alpine climate brings warm summers and snowy winters.

Hiking between Schanfigg and Prättigau

The “From Schanfigg to Prättigau (Langwies–Conters)” route provides a useful reference for planning a hike: it is 16.7 kilometres long, rated moderate and takes about five hours and 35 minutes. On the descent to Conters, it passes the alpine buildings at Conterser Schwendi, Rongg, Stäfischwendi and Wisli, and follows the Wissbach downhill. The route crosses marshland and passes meadows full of gentians. At Duranna Pass, it is worth taking a five-minute detour to picturesque Lake Grünsee. Hiking trails in the surrounding area also lead through landscapes with panoramic views of Prättigau. In winter, you can explore the area on snowshoes; trail and snow conditions may vary with the season. The stated duration makes this a longer day hike; a short walk around the village centre is a different kind of outing.

Winter and Getting There

Conters is on the 11-kilometre Parsenn–Küblis ski run. The village is accessible year-round via a cleared access road, and the journey can be made by coach. The PostBus serves Conters according to its timetable. Check the departure times for your travel date. The starting point also matters for the Langwies–Conters hike: Langwies can be reached from Chur by the Rhaetian Railway in about 50 minutes. Check the current timetable if you plan to use this rail connection to get to the route.

Village History and Culture

The historic village centre, with its beautiful wooden houses, invites you to linger. The village’s character and peaceful surroundings complement its natural attractions. Conters’s little church was built between 1491 and 1518 on a meadow below the village. Its first bell probably dates from the 15th century. In 1991, a third and largest bell, measuring 115 centimetres in diameter, was acquired; it is tuned to E. Kultur.Haus Conters hosts theatre, music and literary events, as well as art exhibitions. If you want to plan your trip around a specific programme, check the dates in advance.

A 2006 cultural publication describes the “Conterser Bock” as a dish from Graubünden that is served only on Good Friday. If this dish is relevant to your trip, check whether it will be available on your dates.
