Tiefencastel lies at the confluence of the Albula and Julia rivers; the Baroque Church of St. Stephen stands there on a rocky outcrop. The village is also the starting point of the third stage of the ViaSett and the sixth stage of the Alpine Bike Route. This combination of hiking and cycling routes and church history offers several possible focuses for a trip.

Hiking the ViaSett and through the Schinschlucht Gorge

The third stage of the ViaSett starts in Tiefencastel and ends in Savognin. It is 12 kilometres long, with a walking time of about four hours. The route involves 780 metres of ascent and 420 metres of descent. For planning your time, you can take this approximate walking time and the elevation changes into account together. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The stage passes through a diverse cultural landscape with former terraced fields and prehistoric settlement sites. This gives the hike a cultural and historical dimension in addition to its specific route details.

Other hiking stages pass through the Schinschlucht Gorge to Tiefencastel. The first stage of the Via Albula/Bernina crosses the gorge and ends in the village. The second stage of the Graubünden Route follows a wild, steep path through the Schinschlucht Gorge to Tiefencastel. When comparing these tours, pay attention to the route and stage in question: both of the hiking stages mentioned end here, while the ViaSett stage starts in Tiefencastel and ends in Savognin. Check current trail conditions and possible detours before setting out on these hikes.

Cycling the Alpine Bike Route

A stage starting in Tiefencastel is also described for a cycling tour: the sixth stage of the Alpine Bike Route ends in Safien Platz. Its route features include a short singletrack through the Albulatobel gorge up to Mistail Church, tunnels and a rough root trail to Muldain. This tour offers a different way to plan your trip than the hiking routes. Trail conditions and technical difficulty can vary seasonally; check both before setting out.

St. Stephen's Church and the history of the village

St. Stephen's was first mentioned in 1343 and replaced St. Ambrose as Tiefencastel's official parish church. The present building was constructed between 1650 and 1652. The new church was consecrated on 28 June 1660 by Ulrich de Mont, Bishop of Chur. The first mention, construction phase and consecration mark different milestones in the church's history. Traces of Bronze Age settlements have also been found on Tiefencastel's church hill. The church and hill therefore offer two specific points of historical interest.

For a sense of the surrounding landscape, it is also worth looking at the municipal area of Albula/Alvra: Tiefencastel lies on the valley floor of the Albula Valley. Meadows, forests, alpine pastures and rugged mountain slopes shape the municipality's landscape. Hiking and walking trails in the municipal area pass through alpine landscapes and along the Albula River. They add further ways to explore the landscape on foot to the clearly defined stages.
