Bergün is located on the Albula–Bernina UNESCO World Heritage route of the Rhaetian Railway. Railway history, distinctive village architecture and hiking trails with varying estimated times are among the possible focuses of a trip here. You can make local history and the railway your main focus, compare circular hikes by duration or plan seasonal winter activities.
Railway Heritage and Village History
The Albula Railway Museum is located right next to Bergün railway station. There, you can learn about the history of the Rhaetian Railway; the museum’s offerings include a driving simulator in a Crocodile locomotive and the Clà Ferrovia children’s tour. This means you can choose to focus not only on the railway line itself, but also on how its history is presented in the museum.
The Bergün Local History Museum is separate from it: it is housed in a former farmhouse built between 1560 and 1600. The local history museum in the village center also features a faithful scale model of the Preda–Bergün railway line, at a scale of 1:87 (H0m). The model gives a clear miniature view of the route of this section.
Along Dorfstrasse, houses with bay windows facing the street and sgraffito façades stand side by side. The Platzturm La tuor also shapes the village’s appearance. It was built as a refuge and defensive tower and used as a prison during railway construction. During the day, you can look inside the Evangelical Reformed Church from the gallery. A cycle of frescoes by an Italian itinerant painter was created during the late Gothic renovation around 1500, including scenes from the Passion of Jesus Christ.
Hiking Routes by Duration and Theme
For a shorter outing, the easy Bergün–Funtanislas–Bergün circular hike is a good option: it is 3.9 kilometers long and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. Funtanislas is considered a green oasis on the valley floor; the Bergün–Funtanislas–Bergün route passes dripstone-like rock overhangs and moss-covered formations known as “animal hospitals.” Seasonal ground conditions may affect access, so it is worth checking conditions before setting out.
The Bergün–Latsch–Stuls–Bergün circular hike takes longer: it is 8.6 kilometers long and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. From Latsch, the route offers views across the valley. Bergün is accessible by train. The two circular hikes therefore differ both in their stated duration and in the landscapes described.
If you want to combine railway history with a hike, consider the Preda–Bergün section of the Albula Railway Adventure Trail. This 7-kilometer mountain hike is rated moderate; the estimated hiking time is 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. The railway adventure trail runs from Preda via Bergün to Filisur and offers insights into the history of the Rhaetian Railway UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Albula/Bernina landscape. Another route from Bergün via Latsch to Stugl/Stuls leads to the Romanesque Church of St. John, with well-preserved Gothic murals.
The Ela circular tour starts and ends in Bergün. It leads via the Ela Hut and Ela Pass, continues over Fuorcla Tschitta to Naz, and returns to Bergün. There are three mountain lakes in the Ela Pass area, where different types of rock are clearly visible. Nearby, in Val Tuors, large colonies of ibex and chamois live.
Winter Trails and Seasonal Activities
The sledge runs differ in length and character: the Preda–Bergün descent is 6 kilometers long and runs through winter scenery toward Bergün, with views of the surrounding mountains. The Darlux–Bergün run is 4.5 kilometers long, with tighter turns and a steeper gradient than the Preda–Bergün run. It ends at the entrance to the village, next to the chairlift’s valley station. Trains run every half hour from Bergün to Preda; frequency may vary depending on the season and operating conditions. Check the timetable before your outing.
The Bergünerstein snowshoe trail starts below the Tect ski lift. On the return, it partly loops around the small Tect/Zinols ski area to the starting point; lift operations may vary by season. The Bergünerstein snowshoe trail includes Urmena Forest and views back toward Bergün. Curling, ice hockey and ice skating are possible on Bergün’s natural ice rinks; availability depends on winter conditions.
Trails and Activities for Different Interests
The stroller-friendly Bergün Wood Trail has nine stations with information, games, puzzles or small tasks. About halfway along, there is a shelter with a barbecue area at station 5. The Nutcracker Trail offers insights at seven interactive stations into the calls of the nutcracker and its role as the “gardener of the forest.” It starts at the La Diala mountain station. From Bergün railway station, walk via the Darlux chairlift’s valley station; the chairlift takes you to the trailhead at the mountain station.
Bergbadi Bergün also offers a range of options: the 50-meter pool has a slide and a children’s pool with a fountain. In cool weather, a heated hot tub and a barrel sauna are available; the barrel sauna can be reserved in advance. At Kiwi Hof in Bergün, you can find farm products such as dried meat, alpine cheese, pasta and veal, as well as baked goods such as Nani’s pear bread and Linzer tarts. The product range may vary by season.
The tours differ in duration and theme; consider which one you would like to make the focus of your trip.
