Tinizong-Rona encompasses a section of the main valley, which runs roughly from south to north and is traversed by the Julia, as well as the approximately 8 km-long Val d’Err, a side valley on its right. In the Oberhalbstein, a wooded slope separates the valley sections of Surgôt and Sotgôt. The area thus brings together diverse landscapes and a history spanning from Roman references to traffic over the mountain passes.
Landscape and wildlife in the Val d’Err
The Val d’Err is home to large colonies of ibex and chamois. Alpine wildlife is a distinct feature of this side valley. If you are interested in nature and wildlife, you can take this into account when choosing your destination.
Son Plasch and the history of the village
The parish church of Son Plasch offers several distinct points of historical interest: its oldest construction phase dates from the 9th century, and the first mention of a parish priest for the church dates from 1180. The Late Gothic winged altar features a painting signed by Jörg Kändel and dated 1512. These dates tell the story of different phases in the church’s history and furnishings.
The village’s name also has a long history: the Itinerarium Antonini first mentions Tinizong in Roman times as Tinnetione. From the late Middle Ages until 1834, Tinizong, with its Port, held an important position as a transit point for traffic over the mountain passes. A visit to the church can thus be combined with a look at Tinizong’s longer-standing role along the pass routes.
Trails for walking, cycling and winter activities
The Vitaparcours begins in the lower part of Tinizong near the football pitch. It follows the Julia towards Rona and returns to the starting point through the forest. Its return to the start distinguishes it from the Julia riverside trail, which begins at the Tinizong, Cadras stop, shortly after Savognin. The riverside trail is listed as 5 km long and takes 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Another route option is the Rona Bike Route: it follows the Julia to Tinizong, then continues along a shaded path through the forest to Rona. On the ViaSett, the Savognin–Bivio stage climbs from Tinizong towards Val Mulegna and continues to Alp Suregn. These trails offer different perspectives on the surroundings; choose one to suit your interests and planned activity.
A snowshoe tour from Rona to Tinizong is listed for winter. At Plaz Beischen, at an altitude of 1547 m, it is classified as WT2. The ascent takes 1 to 1.5 hours over 200 metres of elevation gain, and the descent takes 1.5 to 2 hours over 400 metres of elevation loss. The listed aspects are NE, E, SE and S. Both the separate ascent and descent times and the elevation figures are therefore part of planning the tour.
Family tours and seasonal refreshments
Family tours are offered at the ewz Tinizong hydroelectric power plant, where the world of electricity generation is explained in a fun, interactive way; advance registration is required. In summer 2026, Alp d’Err was expected to serve refreshments from around mid-June to the end of September, depending on the weather, and sometimes longer. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether seasonal refreshments will be available.
