The Albula is a common thread running through excursions in Alvaneu Bad: the Albula Waterway starts and ends here, the Bellaluna–Filisur–Alvaneu Bad winter hiking trail follows the river to the village, and the golf course offers a view of the Landwasser Viaduct. There are also trails through a nature forest reserve, the history of the sulphur springs and the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. Alvaneu Bad, called Alvagni Bogn in Romansh, lies on the valley floor on the banks of the Albula. The village belongs to the municipality of Albula/Alvra, in the Albula Region of the canton of Graubünden.
Hiking along the Albula
The Albula Waterway is a 10.5-kilometre hike for which you should allow around two and a half hours. Along the way, the route passes sulphur-iron springs and the Landwasser Viaduct. Blue information signs point out the various locations along the entire route. Conditions can vary depending on the season.
Another hike, “Power of Nature”, leads from Alvaneu Bad via Crap Furo and through the wild Julia nature forest reserve to Tiefencastel. Crap Furo is a 1,204-metre-high rock tower made of ochre-yellow rauwacke. The route therefore combines a striking rock formation with a walk through the nature forest reserve, while the Albula Waterway returns to its starting point.
Winter trails and golf
The Bellaluna–Filisur–Alvaneu Bad winter hiking trail follows the Albula from Bellaluna to Alvaneu Bad. The Skateline Albula is another winter activity: an ice trail from Bad Alvaneu to Surava that follows the river through snow-covered woodland. A closure was reported for winter 2025/26. Before making plans, check whether the Skateline will be available in a later season.
Golf is also part of the village’s appeal. The Alvaneu Bad Golf Club has an 18-hole course at an altitude of 950 metres above sea level. The course offers a view of the Landwasser Viaduct of the Rhaetian Railway. Alongside the trails by the river and through the forest, golf and the view of the viaduct therefore offer distinct interests to consider when planning your stay.
Sulphur springs and church history
The sulphur baths were first described in 1474 and are considered a mineral spa because of their temperature. The history of the Chapel of the Holy Trinity can be traced through several dates: construction began in 1630, and the chapel was consecrated in 1634. Also in 1634, Hans Greuter from Brixen signed the altarpiece. During the reconstruction in 1854, the former chapel became the choir; a nave and sacristy were also added. These dates therefore distinguish the early construction and artistic history from the later structural expansion.
Getting there and finding accommodation
Alvaneu Bad can be reached via Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the Rhaetian Railway via Tiefencastel or Filisur; from there, you can continue by PostBus. Check the timetables before travelling. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can use the route layout as a practical starting point: the Albula Waterway starts and ends in Alvaneu Bad, while “Power of Nature” leads to Tiefencastel. If you plan this hike, take its endpoint into account when planning your onward route.
