Surava is a village in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, in the Albula region and the municipality of Albula/Alvra. A linear village, it lies on the right bank of the Albula on the valley floor. The Path of the Pioneers offers a specific hiking highlight: the green-signposted local route 754 runs along the valley slope above the Albula from Surava towards Alvaneu Bad. Other attractions include the natural forest reserve near Crap Furò, the village’s appearance and, in winter, the seasonal Albula Skateline.
Hiking the Path of the Pioneers
Fourteen numbered signs mark the 14 stops along the Path of the Pioneers. The signs structure the themed trail along the route. There is also a barbecue area and a playground beside the hiking trail. The path runs along the valley slope above the Albula; on the return route along the river, it leads to the Arvadi sulfur spring. The described route therefore includes both marked stops and the named spring on the way back.
Forest and landscape near Crap Furò
The trail includes the natural forest reserve near Crap Furò. Tree felling has been prohibited there since 2008. Various types of forest grow across its 120 hectares: spruce alternates with mountain pine and Scots pine. Another striking feature is the rock needle Crap Furò, which is considered the geographical center of Graubünden. The forest reserve, tree species and rock needle each lend a distinct character to the landscape around this section.
A seasonal ice trail in winter
The Albula Skateline is described as Switzerland’s first ice trail and runs from Bad Alvaneu to Surava. Its frozen walking path follows the Albula through snow-covered forest. Visitors can put on skates and a helmet, then take the shuttle bus to Alvaneu. The Path of the Pioneers is the themed hiking route; the Skateline is a seasonal winter activity. If you plan to include both in your trip, bear in mind the different types of activity and the Skateline season.
Surava’s history and village character
Surava is a Romansh settlement dating from the period after the 10th century. The village has had its own Catholic parish since 1725. Ornately decorated houses reflect Engadine building traditions. The church of Son Siari is a prominent feature of the village; its main façade depicts Saint George. In addition to its hiking and winter attractions, Surava therefore offers insight into the village’s architectural traditions and history.
Plan your arrival and accommodation
For travel to the Path of the Pioneers, a connection with SBB and the Rhaetian Railway via Chur, or from St. Moritz to Tiefencastel or Filisur, is listed. From there, take the PostBus to Surava Dorf or Alvaneu Bad. Check seasonal timetables before your trip so you can plan your journey accordingly.
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Surava, first decide what you want to focus on: the route with its marked stops and natural forest reserve, or the seasonal Skateline in winter. This will help you choose travel dates that suit your planned activities. Also take into account train and PostBus connections to Surava Dorf or Alvaneu Bad when planning your trip.
