A walking trail with illustrated legends, sacred buildings and a gently rolling plateau give Echarlens in the Gruyère region several distinctive features. The circular route of the “Au pays des Légendes de La Gruyère” walking trail begins in Echarlens or Vuippens; landmarks in its cultural history include the Saint-Garin Chapel and the Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. Echarlens is near Bulle and 24 km from Fribourg. When planning a stay, visitors can weigh up the landscape, walk and sacred art as different highlights of the destination.

Landscape between the plateau and Lake Gruyère

The village lies on a relatively broad plateau overlooking Lake Gruyère to the west. The terrain is gently rolling. To the northeast, a partly wooded ridge shapes the landscape near where the Sionge flows into the lake. The description therefore encompasses both the larger plateau and a more precisely located feature connecting the ridge, river mouth and lake. Le Gringalet is 20 metres tall and is also known as the “Tree of the Druids”.

The regional setting also includes its position between two cantonal roads that link Fribourg and Bulle on either side of the Saane and run close to each other before joining near Riaz. These roads complement the location details of being near Bulle and the distance from Fribourg, without reducing Echarlens to a single neighbouring town.

A walking trail with legends

The circular route is about 3 km long and starts either in Echarlens or in Vuippens. More than 20 illustrated legends from the Gruyère region are available to read along the walking trail. The route follows paths and forest trails. This combines an approximate distance with a clear narrative focus: the legends shape the content of the loop, while the paths and forest trails define its character. Visitors can therefore distinguish the tour not only by its distance but also by its theme.

Sacred architecture and art

Dating from 1670, the Saint-Garin Chapel is a Baroque feature of Echarlens’s sacred landscape in the Gruyère region. It has a Baroque altarpiece with a panel painting of Saints Jerome and Garin. The painting was created in 1712 in a workshop in neighbouring Bulle. The chapel, artwork and workshop location thus form a tangible connection between Echarlens and Bulle.

The Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption offers a different historical reference point. Its foundation stone was laid on 21 April 1924. The church replaced a sanctuary dating from the 17th century that still stands nearby and was also dedicated to the Virgin Mary of the Assumption. The church also houses a large embroidered altarpiece by Marguerite Naville depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Together, the chapel and church illustrate different aspects of sacred history: a Baroque building with a panel painting, and a new church with its own history and an embroidered altarpiece.

Music in the village

Cultural life also includes activities by the Les Armaillis d’Echarlens music society, including several concerts each year.
