A prominent feature of La Tour-de-Trême is its historic tower; alongside it, a few houses dating from the 16th century are among the town’s few surviving old buildings. Churches, settlement history, cultural venues and Bois de Bouleyres forest offer different ways to spend your time. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are more interested in architectural history and cultural events or in exercise and relaxation in the forest.

Geographical orientation

La Tour-de-Trême is a district of the municipality of Bulle in the canton of Fribourg, southeast of Bulle in the direction of the Intyamon valley. In terms of its landscape, the area lies on the southern side of the Trême alluvial fan, at the northern foot of the Moléson massif and in the Bulle basin. The Trême is the river that separates La Tour-de-Trême from Bulle; it is also a tributary of the Saane. Cycle route 9 also passes through La Tour-de-Trême, between Bulle and Le Pâquier.

Buildings and early history

The historic tower is square and no more than 13 metres high up to the roof; its walls are almost two metres thick on average. A clock was installed on the tower in 1683 and can be reached via an interior wooden staircase. The Church of Saint-Joseph stands in the centre of La Tour-de-Trême and was consecrated on 13 September 1876. It is used for concerts, rehearsals and performances. If you are planning to attend an event, check the specific dates.

The first chapel in La Tour-de-Trême was built in 1439. Saint-Denis Chapel became the parish church on 8 January 1603. The fortified medieval settlement was founded by the Counts of Gruyère next to a castle that was destroyed in 1349. Archaeological finds also point to prehistoric settlement in the area, including during the Mesolithic, the Early and Late Bronze Age, and the Hallstatt period.

Cultural venues and events

The Tour historique in La Tour-de-Trême is part of the Trace-Ecart exhibition network. Trace-Ecart holds between three and five exhibitions a year at its venues; this number may change. The CO2 Salle de spectacle de la Gruyère is also located in La Tour-de-Trême and was inaugurated in September 2004. Its cultural season includes more than twenty events, supplemented by a programme outside the season. The scope and dates of the cultural programme may vary.

The Salle CO2 has 758 seats: 527 in the stalls and 231 in the gallery. Its facilities also include a car park with 250 spaces, accessible via the H189. The seating layout and access to the car park via the H189 provide practical guidance for your visit.

Forest and historic routes

Bois de Bouleyres forest lies on rolling terrain between 700 and 780 metres above sea level and is home to a rich variety of animal and plant life. Runners and hikers can make use of a Finnish-style running track and measured routes. The forest also offers opportunities for walking, relaxing, playing and doing sports. These different uses range from exercising on the routes to taking a quieter break in the forest.

A historic route also passes through Bouleyres forest: the section between La Tuilière and Halte des Marches is of national importance. It forms part of the Route des Fromages, which connected Charmey with Bulle from the 16th to the 18th century. Today, the forest is a place for leisure activities and also the setting for the region’s history of routes.
