La Roche stretches from the shores of Lac de La Gruyère to the summit of La Berra, then descends towards the Singine slope. The valley runs from north to south; the Serbache flows through it and empties into the lake. Its bowl-shaped landscape is highly varied: relatively steep slopes give way to two broad agricultural plateaus before the terrain rises towards La Berra and Combert. This geographical sequence sets the scene for excursions between the lake, valley and mountain.
Hiking between the lake and La Berra
For an easier hike in the wider lake area, consider the Sentier du Lac de La Gruyère. The trail is considered easy and is readily accessible by public transport. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the Pre-Alps and turquoise coves. At La Berra, six signposted hiking trails of varying difficulty are available. If you would like to learn more about the area as you explore, consider a guided hike: experts can help you understand the landscape, observe animals and identify plants. Check the availability of guided hikes, trail conditions and seasonal operations before planning.
The two hiking options differ mainly in their stated focus: the Sentier du Lac combines the trail with views of the lake and the Pre-Alps; at La Berra, there are signposted routes of varying difficulty and guided tours that offer insights into nature. This lets you choose according to the kind of outing you have in mind, without assuming a particular route or duration.
Activities in different seasons
For mountain bikes and e-bikes, Berra Bike Park offers two downhill trails with a total length of nine kilometres. La Berra also has several mountain bike and e-bike routes in La Roche. The bike park’s operations and conditions are seasonal. The La Berra–La Roche winter sports area lists ten local downhill runs and 20 lifts; winter hiking and snowshoeing are also among the activities offered. École suisse de ski de La Berra provides lessons and support for learning to ski and snowboard. Course times are seasonal.
Another activity at La Berra is disc golf on a natural course that is also accessible to younger children. From the Télémixte, access involves an approximately 20-minute walk downhill from the top station. It depends on the resort’s operations. Geocaching is also available at La Berra; the geocaches are marked on a map. Hiking, cycling and other activities therefore offer different ways to enjoy the mountain area, each with its own access and operating conditions.
At Lac de La Gruyère: paddling and dining
On the shores of Lac de La Gruyère in La Roche, Kayak Aventure rents kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. The stated offer includes single and double kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and large paddleboards for shared use. As availability may change, it is advisable to confirm which equipment is available in advance. Guided outings are possible on request, including trips for schools or groups to Île d’Ogoz by kayak or SUP. Booking arrangements may also change; confirm the details when making an enquiry.
For a culinary experience on the lake, Restaurant L’Unique offers outings. A boat for six to nine people is used, and there are two themed menus to choose from. Reservation details and menu formats may change, so it is advisable to confirm them before planning. When looking for a place to stay, it is worth shaping your itinerary around your preferred interests: lake activities, hikes and cultural sites in La Roche each offer a different focus.
History, architecture and local produce
Château de La Roche is a heavily ruined, overgrown double-castle ruin on a narrow, rocky ridge. It was first mentioned in 1164 as “castrum de Rupe”. The most significant surviving part is the tower of Ulrich de Vuippens. It is approximately twelve metres high and ten metres wide, and has no openings. The described bus route to the ruin runs from Fribourg on route 234 to La Roche, village, followed by route 235 to Sur-Momont. From there, continue on foot for about 25 minutes along an unmarked forest path. Check the latest bus timetables before planning this route.
In the village, the parish church Eglise paroissiale Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption is located at Route de la Gruyère 28. It was consecrated in 1656; a Baroque altar has been preserved in the choir. Other named historic buildings include the former inn Ancienne pinte de Pierre Théraulaz at Chemin du Stand 7 and a farmhouse at Vers les Roulin 1. Around Lac de La Gruyère, there are also giant sculptures by artist Yves Tinguely, who is based in Rossens.
Local produce is also part of La Roche’s character: Fromagerie de la Roche processes milk into products including Gruyère AOP, Vacherin Fribourgeois AOP, yoghurt, quark and butter. Foire de La Roche is a public market featuring handcrafted goods and regional products. It takes place every year on the last Saturday in October; exact dates and the programme vary from year to year, and the exhibitors change. Check that year’s dates before visiting.
