Eriz combines distinctive moorland landscapes with seasonal activities including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter hiking. When planning your trip, it is worth looking at the different routes and times: a circular route, a groomed winter hiking trail and a cross-country ski network each offer a different way to spend the day.

Moorland and Nature in Eriz

Since 1996, Rotmoos has been included in the Inventory of Mire Landscapes of Particular Beauty and National Importance. The Rotmoos Trail leads to Rotmoos; in summer, you can discover numerous insects and rare plants such as marsh cinquefoil and bog gentian there. The moorland can also be appreciated through its seasonal nature observations.

Another natural area is the Hängst hillside raised bog. It is the centrepiece of the nature reserve of the same name in the municipality of Eriz and lies west of, and above, Chaltenbach at an altitude of 1,260 m. Numerous animal and plant species typical of moorland can be discovered there. Alpine farming, cattle pastures and summer alpine meadows are also part of Eriz’s historical character.

Cross-Country Skiing and Other Winter Activities

The cross-country ski network in SnowPark Eriz includes 10 km of classic trails and 12 km of skating trails. Within the network, the Hohgant trail is 6 km long and the Zulg trail is 8 km long; both classic and skating styles are available on the Zulg trail. The overall network figures and the lengths of individual trails can help you choose the route that suits you.

Innereriz has two sledging runs, each 300 m long. The winter sports area also includes ski lifts, a children’s area and a small fun park; opening times vary. Eriz Swiss Ski and Snowboard School offers group and private ski and snowboard lessons. Check in advance for current lesson options.

Snowshoe Route and Winter Hiking Trail

The Rotmoos Trail is a 7 km circular snowshoe route starting from Innereriz. It includes 380 m of ascent and takes 3 hours 15 minutes. At around 5 km and approximately 1 hour 15 minutes, the groomed Zulg winter hiking trail offers a different time option: it runs from Innereriz Säge along the Zulg and the cross-country ski trail to Eriz Linden. The two times are useful guides when choosing between a snowshoe loop and a winter hiking trail.

Trail grooming and access depend on snow conditions; the route of the Zulg winter hiking trail is also seasonal. Check local conditions before planning your outing.

Hike to KoppisbrĂĽcke

The hike to KoppisbrĂĽcke starts at the Eriz, Losenegg bus stop. A narrow forest path leads down to the Zulg and the covered wooden bridge. KoppisbrĂĽcke connects Eriz and Horrenbach. There is a barbecue area by the bridge, which makes a suitable stop; check its availability locally. You should also check seasonal trail conditions locally.

For a meal, look beyond the village to the Eriz Valley: restaurants there serve Swiss cuisine made with regional products. If you are looking for a hotel in Eriz, first decide when you plan to travel and what you want to focus on. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing offer a different experience from a stay focused on moorland and summer nature observations.
