The Kleine Rundkurs Heimenschwand is five kilometres long and can be skied in either the classic or skating style. The Heimenschwand ski lift offers night skiing with lighting. In autumn and winter, Buchholterberg is often above the fog line; there are also hiking trails, mountain biking routes, a nature reserve with a small lake, and a church featuring details made from erratics. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh up whether seasonal winter sports, scenery or architectural history should shape your stay.
Cross-country skiing and the ski lift in winter
On the Kleine Rundkurs Heimenschwand, you can choose between the classic and skating styles, but not between routes of different lengths: the circuit is five kilometres long. As a winter route, it is seasonal, and conditions vary. Factor these fluctuations into your day’s plans.
The Heimenschwand cross-country ski network lies at an altitude of 930 to 1,030 metres above sea level and runs through the municipalities of Buchholterberg, Oberlangenegg and Wachseldorn. The elevation range describes the network, while the five kilometres refer to the length of the Kleine Rundkurs. This means altitude and route length can be considered as separate planning questions. The three municipalities also indicate the geographical extent of the cross-country ski network.
Take the post bus to Dorf to reach the Heimenschwand ski lift, then continue on foot towards Bleiken. The lift offers night skiing with lighting; its seasonal operation is weather-dependent. Check the post bus timetable for your chosen day before travelling, as timetables may vary.
Sea of fog, panorama and church
In autumn and winter, Buchholterberg is often above the fog line, offering views down over a sea of fog. So the season has a scenic side as well as cross-country skiing.
Below the Church of Buchholterberg, inaugurated in 1837, there are beautiful views across the panorama from the Hohgant to the Gantrisch. The church itself also brings together architectural and landscape history: the window and door surrounds, as well as the base, were carved from two large erratics. These erratics were carried from the Grimsel area to Buchholterberg during the last Ice Age. Their origins connect visible architectural features with the area’s specific Ice Age history.
Hiking trails and moorland
The municipality of Buchholterberg has hiking trails and mountain biking routes. It also has a nature reserve with a small lake. Those who do not want to focus their stay solely on winter activities will find other ideas for planning their trip.
The Wachseldornmoos raised bog lies in the area around Buchholterberg. The Wachseldornmoos nature reserve protects a remnant of raised bog with a peat base, wet meadows and areas where peat has been extracted. The Wachseldornmoos offers short hikes and views of the Pre-Alps. The moorland thus combines specific protected habitats with short hikes and far-reaching views across the landscape.
