Above Lake Thun, Heiligenschwendi combines views of the lake and the Bernese Alps with trails of various kinds: winter walks, a family adventure trail, themed paths and an e-bike route. To plan your visit, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on: the route itself, a themed trail or the landscape. Each option has a different emphasis.

Winter Trails and Themed Paths

The 9 km Heiligenschwendi circular trail starts and ends at the Alpenblick stop. As a winter walking trail, it passes through winter forests; along the way, wide-ranging views open up across the sea of fog and towards the Bernese Alps. Its moderate difficulty rating provides another useful guide when planning your route.

The Owl Trail also starts and ends at the same stop. It is a learning, play and adventure trail for the whole family. Free parking is available at the start, near the tennis court in Heiligenschwendi. The Spycher Trail has a different focus: it is divided into a lower section and an upper section, and information boards stand at the individual Spycher granaries.

On the Sirius Planet Trail, information boards explain the planets and give a sense of the distances between celestial bodies in space. At Tschingelallmi, the trail branches off towards Heiligenschwendi. The village is also a starting point for hikes through fir forests and across lush meadows. In winter, activities include winter walking, cross-country skiing, sledging and snowshoeing; the village also has a family ski area with a children's lift.

Chapel and Christmas Trail

A regional church and a free church jointly built a chapel in Heiligenschwendi in 1925. A church description from September 2025 notes that both congregations still use it and regularly hold joint services there. The Christmas Trail tells the traditional Christmas story at various stops. It starts each year on the first Sunday of Advent and ends on 6 January, Epiphany. This means the trail is available during a clearly defined seasonal period, while the chapel is also associated with the congregations' shared use.

Views and Outdoor Spots

Heiligenschwendi is a health resort above Lake Thun, with views of the lake and the Bernese Alps. Nearby, the 16 m-high Blueme observation tower extends the panorama to include the Bernese Alps, the Emmental, the Jura and Lake Thun. Picnics are possible at a fire pit, and Blueme can be reached on foot or by bike via various routes. Also nearby, Niesenbänkli has a barbecue area and views of Lake Thun and the Niesen.

The HĂĽniboden barbecue area is a grill spot in the middle of the forest. It has 30 covered seats, additional outdoor seating, a large fireplace and a Texas smoker. So, alongside the viewpoints, there are also places with practical facilities for barbecuing.

E-Biking and Regional Products

The “Queen Stage” of the Heart Route from Thun to Langenthal climbs up to Heiligenschwendi by e-bike. The STI Bike Shuttle runs from Berntorplatz in Thun to Goldiwil, Wendeplatz, or to Heiligenschwendi, Alpenblick, providing direct access to the Goldiwheel or Rabenfluh trails. Check the shuttle timetable before your ride to make sure the connection fits your plans.

Regional products are another local option: the SWISSHOF farm shop offers them. It brings together products from various farms and small producers within a 20 km radius at one location in Heiligenschwendi. Active outings and a look at regional production thus offer different ways to shape your stay.
