Blumenstein combines a group of church buildings at the foot of the Stockhorn range with hiking trails and historic farmhouses. This makes cultural history and a variety of routes the main considerations when planning a trip, from a hike starting in Thun to the 41-kilometre Stockental Route. The focus you choose depends on whether you want to explore individual buildings and their history or prioritise a longer tour.

Church and Historic Architecture

Blumenstein Church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, was founded around 1285 by Johann von Weissenburg. Well-preserved stained-glass windows from the golden age of Königsfelden stained glass, together with the church, form a well-known attraction. The group of church buildings, including the associated parsonage buildings, stands at the upper end of the Fallbach’s mighty, uniformly rising alluvial fan. As a village setting at the foot of the Stockhorn range, it is of national importance.

The houses in the Stockental valley also illustrate different aspects of the region’s architectural history. The Stockental House Trail was created by the Bernese Heritage Society and Bernese Hiking Trails. In Rüdeli, the ensemble includes a richly decorated farmhouse dating from 1655, which was extensively restored between 1986 and 1991. Allmiteggen is a 17th-century farmhouse and an example of an old house type from the northern Alpine foothills. The settlement of Eschli is distinguished by its unique collection of such farmhouses with shallow-pitched gabled roofs.

Hikes with Different Route Features

Blumenstein has a well-developed network of well-maintained hiking trails. The hike from Thun to Blumenstein passes through Uetendorf, Thierachern and Uebeschi and ends at Blumenstein municipal hall. The Stockental Route, by contrast, is a 41-kilometre circular tour with 600 metres of ascent and descent, a moderate difficulty rating and a recommended season from March to October. This information about route type, length and season can help you choose a tour. Check seasonal trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

On the way to Blumenstein, the Stockental Route runs along the left-hand slope of the valley, with views of the GĂĽrbetal and the Bernese Alps. It briefly follows the Stockental House Trail before branching off towards Blumenstein Church at the upper edge of the village. Another route is stage 11/33 of the ViaJacobi from Spiez to Wattenwil: it runs from Uebeschi via Blumenstein and then follows the Fallbach and later the GĂĽrbe to Wattenwil. These route descriptions provide different points of reference for planning; check the specific trail conditions before departure.

Alp Langenegg and Seasonal Planning

A description published in 2021 lists two ways to reach Alp Langenegg from Blumenstein: by car along a toll farm road through Blumenstein Forest, or on foot via hiking and mountain hiking trails through the Fallbach gorge or Blumistein Forest. As conditions can change seasonally, check access in advance. A visitor description from the same year mentions an alpine restaurant there, as well as Bernese Alpine and Hobelkäse AOP cheeses, Mutschli, goat’s cheese and butter. Before visiting, confirm whether the restaurant is open and which products are available.

The Seasons Concerts at Blumenstein Church include spring, summer, autumn and winter concerts in the 2026 and 2027 programme. Check the date of the concert you want to attend. An STI concert bus on line 3 is planned for the concerts, running from Thun railway station to the church and back after the concert; check the service for your chosen date.

Blumenstein campsite is open from 1 May to 30 September and is available exclusively for monthly rentals. It is therefore not an option for day-by-day rentals. Check the terms and conditions for the season in which you plan to travel.
