Kandersteg can be explored through a range of very different themes: an exposed via ferrata route, hiking trails to lakes and valleys, museums about local and cable car history, and seasonal activities. When planning your trip, it is worth thinking in advance about which of these themes you want to shape your stay.
Via ferrata with Nepalese bridges and Tyroleans
The Kandersteg-Allmenalp via ferrata is graded K4, a difficult and very exposed route. Its total length is 650 metres, with an ascent of 550 metres. The route includes two Nepalese bridges and two Tyroleans: one is 50 metres long and the other 110 metres. The longer Tyrolean may only be used with a mountain guide. The via ferrata is open to the public, but cannot be booked or reserved. Access rules may change when safety restrictions are in place; check the operator’s safety status before using the route.
Hiking routes and trails in the village
The Kandersteg–Lake Oeschinen route leads to Lake Oeschinen, at the entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Via Alpina includes one stage from Griesalp via Hohtürli to Kandersteg and another from Kandersteg to Adelboden. Hiking trails in Kandersteg also include routes to Lake Oeschinen, into the Gasterntal, and to Lake Blausee and Lake Daubensee. These destinations offer different directions for hikes, though no walking times or distances are provided here for these routes.
For a walk in the village, a signposted hiking route leads from the village centre to the House of Museums. The route is 1.4 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of 20 minutes. In winter, the original route of the Green Trail passes the valley station of the Oeschinen gondola lift and continues to the Nordic Arena ski jumping stadium. Trail conditions vary by season.
Lake Oeschinen: tobogganing and rowing
The toboggan run is located right next to the Lake Oeschinen mountain station. It is 750 metres long and descends 150 metres; it operates seasonally. Visitors can row on the lake in the rowing boats available there. From Kandersteg, access to the rowing experience is by Oeschinen gondola lift, followed by a 20-minute walk to the lake. Gondola lift operating information can vary seasonally, as can the dates for rowing.
Cable cars and local history
The Swiss Cable Car Museum in Kandersteg explores the history, development, construction and operation of Swiss cable cars. The technology of individual lifts is explained using original components and models, alongside props, documents, photographs and films. The House of Museums focuses on the history of Kandersteg, particularly the importance of the transport routes over the Lötschen and Gemmi passes, as well as railway construction and tourism.
An annual event also forms part of the area’s cultural context: the Gastern sermon takes place in the nearby Gasterntal on the first Sunday in August, with a reading from the Gastern Bible. If you plan to attend, check the exact dates and arrangements.
Nordic Arena: tours and seasonal activities
Tours of the Nordic Arena ski jumping facility give visitors an insight into its history, reconstruction and technology. From the top, visitors can enjoy a view over the facility and Kandersteg. Advance registration is required for the bookable tour. Mountain tubing is another seasonal activity there: visitors ride down the slope of a ski jump on inflatable tyres, reaching speeds of up to 90 km/h. Weather and operating information may change, so check the current activity dates before making plans.
