The hiking trail network in Aeschi Bei Spiez ranges from leisurely walking paths to seven-hour mountain tours. You can plan your day around the time available without assuming every trail takes the same amount of time. The trails are well marked and offer views of Lake Thun and the surrounding mountains.

Hiking with Different Time Budgets

For an easy walk, try the village circular trail: it is suitable for strollers and both starts and ends at the municipal square by the Aeschi, Post bus stop. Another clearly defined option is the easy 7.4-kilometre panoramic circular hike. It starts and ends at the Aeschi b. Spiez, Post bus stop and passes through Aeschiried and Suldhalten. Information on distance, difficulty and route helps distinguish this loop from the longer mountain tours in the hiking trail network.

The Bänkli circular trail combines hiking with plenty of places to sit: numerous benches line the trail, some specially designed for resting. The Niesen bench is at the highest point. From there, you can enjoy views across the Kandertal and the Niesen range, as well as of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.

Family-friendly options include the Chugeli Trail and the treasure and puzzle trails, all part of the Aeschi Trails. In the Suldtal lies the Pochtenfall waterfall, which can be reached on foot via a short circular trail in 15 minutes. The Suldtal nature reserve offers opportunities for hiking and cycling and is open from early May to the end of October. Check the conditions for your visit before travelling.

Winter Trails and Snow Activities

The 12-kilometre winter hiking trail runs from Aeschi to Aeschiried. It follows the Bänkli circular trail but takes a slightly different route and is accessible only in winter. Check snow and trail conditions before setting out. Two snowshoeing routes are marked in Aeschi.

In winters with plenty of snow, 35 kilometres of cross-country ski trails for classic and skating techniques extend from Aeschi to Unterer Obersuld. The snow-dependent activities also include a family-friendly winter sports area with two ski lifts and two practice lifts. These winter options differ both in activity and in the snow conditions required.

Church, Cheese and Bread Baking

Aeschi Church also offers a glimpse into the history of the village: its origins date back to the 10th century, and it is one of the so-called “Twelve Lake Thun Churches.” Fragments of wall paintings in the Al-secco technique have been preserved in the Late Gothic rectangular choir; they probably date from the first half of the 14th century. The church is open at all times. If you are travelling there for a specific reason, check access locally beforehand.

At the alpine dairy, you can watch alpine cheese being made and taste the finished product. Visits are seasonal and require a reservation; check the current dates. At the old OfehĂĽsi, guided tours show how bread is baked in the oven. Flammkuchen and a drink are served while the bread is baking, and participants take a freshly baked plaited loaf home with them. Tour dates are seasonal and should be checked before planning your visit.

Travel and Seasonal Planning

PostBus routes 61 and 62 connect Aeschi with Spiez every half hour; route 62 continues to Aeschiried once an hour. Check the current timetable before travelling. A Suldtal bus, funded by a sponsoring organisation, is planned for weekends and public holidays from July to October. It is not an official PostBus route; check current operations and fares before travelling.
