Rünenberg combines a geologically distinctive stream with a local history shaped by silk ribbon weaving. At the Giessen, the layers of the Tafeljura are exposed; in the village, passementerie and historical forms of the place name tell of different eras. The Honey Trail adds a self-guided circular route with information boards, while the Baselbieter Chirsiweg places Rünenberg on a route through several villages. This lets you consider nature, local history and regional products together when planning your trip.

Landscape and the Rünenberg Giessen

Rünenberg lies on a hilltop at around 599 m above sea level and covers about 4.97 km². The village has retained its rural character. At the Rünenberg Giessen, river erosion cuts uphill and exposes deeper rock layers of the Tafeljura. There, the Chrintelbach plunges over a step more than 20 metres high, formed by limestone of the Hauptrogenstein. The force of the waterfall depends on rainfall.

Honey Trail and Baselbieter Chirsiweg

The Rünenberg Honey Trail is a 3.5-kilometre circular route that you can walk independently. Information boards along the route share facts about honey. At stop 12, several varieties of honey from the Oberbaselbiet are offered for sale daily. Before your visit, check the latest route information and, if you plan to buy honey, its availability.

The Baselbieter Chirsiweg runs from Sommerau near Rümlingen via Rünenberg and Wenslingen to Oltingen. From Rünenberg and Wenslingen, cherry trees line the route and transform the Baselbiet into a sea of blossoms in spring. The exact flowering time varies from year to year. While the Honey Trail shares knowledge about honey on a circular route, the Chirsiweg places Rünenberg on a route through several villages and offers a seasonal connection to the cherry blossom.

Passementerie and local history

Rünenberg is known as a passementerie village. Silk ribbon weaving took hold in the mid-18th century and shaped the village’s appearance. Among other changes, high-stud timber-frame buildings were replaced by multi-purpose buildings. This development links the village’s textile history with its built form.

Rünenberg was first mentioned in a document in 1102 as “Runachperh” and was called “Runenberg” in 1454. A Roman road connected Sommerau and Zeglingen and crossed what is now the municipality of Rünenberg. These recorded forms of the name and the historic road link add much earlier periods to the more recent local history.

Regional products and finding accommodation

At Vogt Weine in Rünenberg, local wine tastings are offered with an aperitif and regional products. If you plan to attend a tasting, ask about booking conditions in advance.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Rünenberg, it helps to distinguish between your interests: the Honey Trail is a circular walk of a set length, the Chirsiweg is a route through several villages, and passementerie provides a historical focus. This allows you to plan your stay around a route, season or cultural interest without turning it into a fixed day-by-day itinerary.
